Belinda Bencic v Coco Gauff Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Bencic and Gauff at any kind of competitive level.

Bencic Weathers the Storm

The world number 12 Bencic needed an hour and 36 minutes to get past Australia’s Storm Sanders in her second round match. And while she was a straight-set winner, there were a few tough moments she survived in the encounter, especially in the second set.

Bencic, after earning two breaks and winning the opening set easily, went 2-0 ahead in the second set as well. However, Sanders broke back soon after to level the set at 3-3, only for Bencic to snatch the advantage back.

Sanders had a chance to dish out something similar yet again next game but Bencic overcame a break-point before completing the victory 6-2, 6-4. The Swiss player had earlier registered a resounding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Misaki Doi in her second round encounter.

It now remains to be seen if Bencic can build on this start after having struggled through her comeback since the pandemic break ended. Earlier this season, she had made the third round of the Australian Open and gotten knocked out in the opener at the Grampians Open.

Gauff Makes it Four in Four

Having qualified for the tournament on the back of two qualifying victories, Gauff made it three successive wins in the main draw of the competition to make it to the semifinal. In doing so, Gauff also won her fourth match in a row in a three-setter, three of which came with the American down a set.

One of those wins came in the quarterfinal, where Gauff, having lost the first set to Shelby Rogers 6-2, went past her opponent 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to cement her place in the semifinal. Gauff needed an hour 52 minutes, and came back from a break down on four separate occasions in those last two sets to seal the deal.

While both players finished with six breaks of serves in the end, it was Gauff’s ability to do that under pressure that saw her through – she broke Rogers twice as she served at 4-5 to stay in the set.

The last time Gauff made it as far as the semifinal as a qualifier, she had gone on to win her maiden WTA title – it would be interesting to see if she can challenge a player who is herself vying for a top-10 spot after showing signs of returning to her old form.

Bencic v Gauff Prediction and Tip

Nothing to choose between the two according to the bookmakers, both starting out 10/11 to win this. We will be going with Bencic’s experience to edge out her American opponent.

Tip: Bencic to win: 10/11 (bet365)
