Roberto Bautista Agut v Peter Gojowczyk Head to Head

They have played five times at the highest level between 2012 and 2019 and Bautista Agut has won every single time including at their last meeting at the 2019 Wimbledon first round, in straight sets. In fact Gojowczyk has won only one set across those five encounters.

Bautista Agut Stitches A Second Win

In a season and a half where winning has been bit of a luxury for the Spaniard, Bautista Agut has done well to make it two in two and reach the semifinal here. That he has won both his rounds so far after a first round bye, in straight sets, is an added incentive.

After crashing the local man Gregoire Barrere’s party in the first round, Bautista Agut had a bit of a toughie as his quarterfinal opposition, especially going by the standards of his opening round.

That Bautista Agut still managed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ugo Humbert to come through in an hour and 16 minutes speak volumes about the manner in which the Spaniard absorbs pressure – because till before the start of this tournament, he was 1-3 on win-loss this season, having also struggled in the second part of the 2020 season.

By the looks of it, the resurrection is around the corner.

Gojowczyk Continues to Defy the Odds

The only time Gojowczyk was a favourite in this tournament was at his qualifying matches, and he won both of them to make the main draw. That result followed his run of losses at the Challenger events before this.

Not expected to go too far in the main draw, Gojowczyk then defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets, despite entering the match at 2/1 odds to go the distnace. A tough three-setter against Jiri Vesely followed soon after but in what was expected to be a difficult quarterfinal, Gojowczyk crushed Dennis Novak to enter the last four.

Gojowczyk needed an hour and 23 minutes to come through 6-4, 6-1, encountering a single break and seven set-points in the opening set. That effort seemed to have taken a huge toll on the higher-ranked Novak as he capitulated meekly to three breaks of serve in the next set.

Bautista Agut will be a different cup of tea.

Bautista Agut v Gojowczyk Prediction and Tip

It is no surprise that Bautista Agut starts off at 1/5 to win this one and 7/2 for a Gojowczyk victory. RBA to prove too powerful but we could see pockets of resistance from his doughty opponent.

Tip: Bautista Agut to win in straight sets: 3/5 (bet365)
