Daniil Medvedev v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and the head to head stands at 1-1. This is thanks to Lajovic winning their clay court tie at the Monte-Carlo Masters semifinals in 2019 following a 6-2, 6-1 pummelling at the ATP Moscow in 2018 at the hands of Medvedev.

Medvedev Enters with New Goals

It was a winning streak of epic proportions for Medvedev and when he won his Australian Open semifinal against Stefanos Tsitipas, it was his 20th straight win, taking him in the elite company of some of the best in the world.

And while Serbia’s world number one Novak Djokovic broke that run with a straight-set win in the final, thereby denying Medvedev a maiden Grand Slam win, it now means the Russian has a different goal come the Rotterdam Open. With the withdrawal of Nadal from this tournament and the Acapulco Open, Medvedev has a chance of becoming the world number two.

What Medvedev now needs to do to get to the number two spot is to make it to the final of this tournament. And the manner in which he has been dispatching most of his opponents in recent times, it looks like a very likely scenario.

Interestingly, other than the final against Djokovic, Medvedev has dropped a set only twice this season and one of them came against another Serb, Fillip Krajinovic. Can Medvedev avoid something like that against his third Serb opponent in 10 days?

Lajovic Gunning for a Top 20 Spot

The world number 27 is four spots away from his career-best, having missed out on a good chance of climbing up a few spots at the Montpellier Open earlier this week. Facing Dennis Novak in the first round, Lajovic fell away to a straight-set loss despite coming into the tournament as the third seed.

The problem, however, is Lajovic is a clay-court specialist and the last time he won a couple of matches indoors was way back in 2018. And while he did make it to the fourth round at the Australian Open, despite going into one of those matches at 2/1 odds – second round against Alexander Bublik – it would be too much of a task to expect him to get past one of two best players in the world these last few months.

Lajovic had earlier this year struggled to get going in the ATP Cup, losing both his singles matches, having also ended the previous season on a five-match losing streak. It was after these seven losses did Lajovic finally get going at the Australian Open to register his career-best performance but Medvedev would be a different kettle of fish.

Medvedev v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

This shouldn’t be too much of a hassle for Medvedev. Unless exhaustion becomes a criteria, Medvedev can be expected to wrap this up in straight sets.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
