Borna Coric v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head

There have been no previous matches played between Coric and the 145th-ranked van de Zandschulp.

Coric Struggling Despite Kyrgios Win

In what was expected to be an explosive match, Coric easily got past Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 of the Murray River Open. With the kind of online history they have shared in the past, Coric’s takedown of his Aussie opponent 6-3, 6-4, should have given him the kind of confidence no other result would have.

Unfortunately for the Croat, that result was followed by a straight-set defeat to Dan Evans – the eventual winner of that tournament – and a second round loss to MacKenzie McDonald at the Australian Open. Coric was a 1/5 strong odds to win that encounter.

It’s inconsistencies like these that have hurt Coric in recent times, which is visible even from how results went for him last season.

He had a quarterfinal appearance at the US Open and a final at the St. Petersburg Open but other than that, he ended the post-pandemic season with a win-loss record of 4-5. Not the best for a player who was not so long ago ranked 12th in the world.

Strong Starts Gets van de Zandschulp to Career-Best

He is currently ranked 145th in the world, which is van de Zandschulp’s best ranking on the ATP charts ever. And the Dutchman has his showing at the Great Ocean Road to thank for that.

Having qualified for his first ever Australian Open earlier this season came with a second benefit – he was able to participate in one of the tune-up tournaments in the lead-up to the Australian Open. And it was in that very competition that van de Zandschulp won three rounds, including one against Reilly Opelka to get to the quarterfinals.

Even in that defeat to Karen Khachanov, van de Zandschulp looked like a part, taking the match into a third set.

While his Australian Open dreams ended in a first round defeat and he followed that up a qualifying loss at the Montpellier Open, the 25-year-old has shown he is not one to be trifled with. Can he carve out an upset win here?

Coric v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

Coric will be a heavy favourite here despite his inconsistencies, starting out at 3/10 to win this and 4/6 to do that in straight sets. van de Zandschulp has shown to be a fighter but was that showing in Melbourne a one-off?

Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
