Stan Wawrinka v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

The World No. 20 Wawrinka leads the World No. 21 Khachanov 2-1.

The Swiss won at St. Petersburg and Doha in 2018 and 2019, while the Russian won at the Canadian Masters in 2019.

Wawrinka Begins Quest for a 17th Title

Three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka returns to action after a disappointing Australian Open campaign.

The 35-year-old, who won the Melbourne major in 2014, was knocked out of the second round of the first slam of the year by Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

In an up-and-down Round-of-64 contest, Fucsovics had taken a two-sets-to-love lead before the Swiss came back to force the decider only to lose in a nail-biting fifth-set tie-break.

Wawrinka, who had begun the season with two wins at the Murray River Open before withdrawing from the tournament, had beaten Portugal’s Pedro Sousa in the first round of the Australian Open.

A winner of 16 career titles, including the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 U.S. Open, Wawrinka is yet to capture a title since claiming his last in Geneva in 2017.

He featured in two finals in 2019, but finished runner-up to Andy Murray in Antwerp and Gael Monfils in Rotterdam.

The Swiss right-hander, who is 3-1 this year, was 15-8 in 2020, which saw him enter a semifinal and four quarterfinals. He also played two Challenger events in Prague, winning one of them.

The former World No. 3 won the Rotterdam title in 2015, when he rallied to down Tomas Berdych in a three-set final.

Khachanov In Decent Form

2019 French Open quarterfinalist Karen Khachanov comes into the tournament on the back of a couple of decent tournaments.

The 24-year-old aggressive baseline player is 6-2 this year, having made to the semifinals of the Great Ocean Road Open and the third round of the Australian Open.

A four-time winner on the Tour, the Russian started the year with wins over Australia’s Max Purcell, South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschulp to enter the semifinal at Great Ocean Road, before falling to Jannik Sinner in a closely-contested three-setter.

At the Australian Open, Khachanov continued his good form, beating Aleksander Vukic and Richard Berankis in the first two rounds to enter the Round of 32 for the third consecutive year but a spot in the Round of 16 remained elusive as he failed to find a way past Matteo Berrettini, losing in straight sets, all of which were decided in tie-breaks.

Yet to lose a final, the Russian captured three of his four career titles in 2018, and that included the Paris Masters. He finished the 2020 season with a 20-15 record.

Wawrinka v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Wawrinka is seeded eighth but faces a huge obstacle in the first round. Expect the unseeded Russian to test the Swiss and even put him under pressure by taking the match to a deciding set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
