Roberto Bautista Agut v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

This will be the first match between the two Spaniards, one a world number 13 and the other ranked 56th on the ATP charts.

Bautista Agut Hoping to Go the Distance

It has been a while since Bautista-Agut won an ATP title, and since returning to tennis from the pandemic break the Spaniard’s best showing came at the Cincinnati Masters way back in August 2020 where he made the semifinal.

Since then, Bautista-Agut has often flattered to deceive. He has won a couple of rounds, like he did at the US Open and the French Open last year, but then fallen away, finishing the previous season with a semifinal at the Cologne Open under his belt.

Earlier this year, Bautista-Agut failed to get going in Australia as well. Struggling to cope with the quarantine rules in Melbourne, Bautista-Agut called them a jail with wi-fi and ended up losing three of the four matches he played – including a first round loss at the Australian Open to Radu Albot, who was a whopping 10/1 to win the encounter.

The good news for Bautista-Agut is he has shown signs of returning back to form with back to back wins at the Montpellier Open, and at the time of writing will be a favourite going into his semifinal there.

Can he continue to exhibit similar form here as well?

Improving Fokina Seeks Career-Best Ranking

A career-best ranking of 52nd in the world, Fokina will hope to jump up a few places from his current 56th and race past his previous best. And he has shown signs of improvement after having had a late start to the season.

After missing the Australian Open because he tested positive for the coronavirus, Fokina suffered further misery when he had to retire from the Quimper Challenger opening round because of an ankle injury.

He returned to the sport in a fortnight’s time to take part in the Biella Challenger, where he made the second round before finally taking part in his first ATP tournament of the season in Montpellier. With wins over Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Hubert Hurkacz in the first two rounds, Fokina made it to the quarterfinal where he fell fighting in three sets to Egor Gerasimov.

Up against a sterling fellow Spaniard, it might not get any easy for Fokina but expecting him to put up a fight here.

Bautista Agut v Fokina Prediction and Tip

At odds of 1/3, Bautista Agut is a heavy favourite to win this and while we back him to come through, we are giving Fokina a chance to scalp at least a set off his higher-pedigreed opponent.

Tip: Fokina to win a set – Yes: 1/1 (bet365)
