Giulia Gatto-Monticone v Tereza Martincova Head to Head
The head-to-head is tied at 1-1, but none of those meetings came at tour level.
Martincova beat the Italian as a 19-year-old in an ITD event in Bath in 2014. But Gatto-Monticone won their most last meeting at the Italian Team Championship in 2018.

First Main Draw Appearance in a year for Italian
Giulia Gatto-Monticone will join Camila Giorgi as the only two Italians in the main draw of the Lyon Open. But unlike her accomplished countrywoman, Gatto-Monticone overcame two determined opponents in the shape of Jaqueline Cristian and Barbara Haas in qualies to reach the round of 32.
This represents a major achievement for the world no.170. Excluding the Prague Open of 125K, this is the first top tier event in exactly a year that she has managed to reach the main draw (the last was Monterrey last March).
The woman from Turin needed all her fighting spirit and resolve in her final qualifying match against Austria’s Haas. She dropped the opening set 6-2 to an opponent who is nine years her junior. But the early goings of the second set spelled the beginning of Gatto-Monticone’s recovery. The opening game lasted 20 points, with two break chances for Haas, which in the grand scheme of things would have given the Austrian a cushion.
However, Gatto-Monticone managed to eke out a hold, and what followed was a long whirlwind of breaks. Neither player held serve for the next seven games, before the Italian managed to serve out for the set 6-3.
Things managed to cool slightly in the third set. But the final thrust managed to come from the Italian’s racket. At 3-3 in the decider Gatto-Monticone secured two decisive breaks of serve to clinch a rare main draw spot in a WTA tour event.

Martincova Breezes into Past Yerolymos and Naito
Tereza Martincova was the top seed in the qualifying draw of the Lyon Open. And she lived up to the billing with two dominant straight sets victories over Margot Yerolymos and Yuki Naito to make her first main draw appearance since the Linz Open. She will certainly hope for good fortune in her opening match in Lyon, since she retired due to abdominal strain in Linz.
The Czech who failed in her latest bid to qualify for the Australian Open last month (sixth attempt), has only played in a couple of ITF tournaments prior to Lyon. She lost early in one of them and made the last eight in her most recent participation (Grenoble).
The 26-year-old enters this tournament ranked at no.129 in the world, but she has never cracked the top 100 before. Her major highlight from last year was a semifinal showing in Istanbul in which she beat France’s Caroline Garcia for the second time in her career.
Martincova famously battled fellow Czech and world no.6 Karolina Pliskova in the first round of the 2019 US Open, pushing her compatriot to the limits in a 7-6 7-6 defeat.
Gatto-Monticone v Martincova Prediction and Tip
The Czech has not made any strides to touch the top 100 barrier in her career, which explains there are holes in her game that Gatto-Monticone can exploit. But on this surface, which plays extremely fast, we reckon Martincova will have the upper hand.
Tip: Martincova to win: 1/5 (bet365)
