Elena Rybakina v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

At the WTA level, these two have played each other once with Rybakina having won their meeting at the Luxembourg Open in 2019 in straight sets. Before that there was another meeting at the ITF level in the same season and Rybakina had edged past Siegemund in that one too, giving her an overall lead of 2-0.

Rybakina Hoping to Get Back to Her Best

The last two seasons have been some of the best tennis Rybakina has played, pushing her into the top 20 as a result. This year, in comparison, has been rather lacklustre for a player of her caliber.

She had begun well though, winning the first three matches of the season at the Abu Dhabi Open. Unfortunately for her, a defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal of that tournament kick-started her run of poor form in Melbourne.

May be it was a case of adapting to the stringent rules associated with the quarantining in Australia, but Rybakina was below par in both the tournaments she played in – at the Grampians Trophy and Australian Open.

At the former, she was dumped out in her opener by Barbora Krejcikova while at the season’s first Grand Slam, a rather rusty-looking Rybakina needed three sets to get past Vera Zvonareva and then fell in straight sets to Fiona Ferro.

Siegemund Solid in Qualifiers

Coming into the Qatar Open qualifiers on the back of a three-match losing streak, the pressure was on Siegemund to try and ease herself into the main draw and she did that in fine style. While the opposition wasn’t the toughest and the German was a favourite in every match, she managed to carve out back to back straight-set wins to get to here.

In fact she lost only eight games over the first two matches and it was only Lesia Tsurenko who managed to push Siegemund even a little in their final qualifying encounter.

Earlier, after having also lost in the first round at the Abu Dhabi Open, losing to the veteran Kirsten Flipkens, Siegemund managed a third round appearance at the Gippsland Trophy. However, back to back losses in the first round of the Australian Open and Adelaide International would have pushed the world number 56 back a tad.

Can she recover from those to get past Rybakina?

Rybakina v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Rybakina hasn’t been in the best of form but as opposed to her opponent here, she should have slightly more confidence and her better pedigree should see her through.

Tip: Rybakina to win: 1/2 (bet365)
