Maria Sakkari v Madison Keys Head to Head

Sakkari leads 1-0 head to head, having won their only meeting at the Australian Open last year. The Greek won the Round-of-32 contest 6-4, 6-4 to reach her maiden fourth round in the Melbourne major.

Keys Stuns Bencic on Return

Playing her first match since September, Madison Keys made a winning return to court as she stunned sixth seed Belinda Bencic in the first round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday.

The American, who had not played since her first round exit from the French Open last year, struck 24 winners and made just 17 unforced errors to defeat Bencic 6-4, 6-1 in 67 minutes.

The 26-year-old, who missed the Australian Open after testing positive for coronavirus days before she was supposed to leave for Melbourne, will take a lot of confidence from her first win of the season.

Bencic had come into the contest with a runner-up finish in Adelaide a couple of days ago, but failed to replicate that form as she made 20 unforced errors and got broken four times in the match, allowing the 2017 U.S. Open finalist to dictate terms.

A 10-time finalist on tour, Keys has won five titles, with her last two coming in Charleston and Cincinnati in 2019. She reached the final in Brisbane last year but finished runner-up after falling to Karolina Pliskova in a three-set final.

Sakkari Powers Past Sherif

Taking on Keys in the next round will be Greece’s Maria Sakkari, who overwhelmed Egyptian wild card Mayar Sherif in the first round on Monday.

The Greek won 90% of her first serve points and converted 5 of 7 break point chances to take the contest 6-0, 6-3 in just over an hour.

The win improved the 2019 Rabat Grand Prix winner to 7-3 this year.

The World No. 25 began the season in scintillating form, defeating Anastasia Potapova, Cori Gauff, Garbine Muguruza and Sofia Kenin en route to the semifinal in Abu Dhabi, before going down to Aryna Sabalenka.

At the Grampians Trophy in Melbourne, Sakkari reached her third successive semifinal (she also reached the final four at the Ostrava Open in October 2020), but once again failed to reach the title clash, losing to Annet Kontaveit in a third set match tiebreak.

The 25-year-old Sakkari made a shock first round exit from the Australian Open last month after going down to France’s Kristina Mladenoivc.

Sakkari v Keys Prediction and Tip

With Keys showing good form on return and Sakkari already in decent touch, expect this to be a close contest. But the Greek should have the upper hand having played a lot more this season.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
