Kristina Mladenovic vs Margarita Gasparyan Head to Head

Gasparyan leads the head-to-head tally by 1-0, last beating the Frenchwoman more than 5 years ago in the 2015 WTA Moscow.

Mladenovic Survives an Early Scare

Kristina Mladenovic started her journey in Lyon against the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu. The marathon match went on for a little over two and a half hours and saw the Frenchwoman beat Buzarnescu 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

With that win, the 27-year-old Mladenovic is now 3-4 this season. She started her season on a bleak note with back-to-back first-round defeats in the WTA Abu Dhabi and the Yarra Valley Classic.

In the Australian Open, she made it to the third round after moving past Maria Sakkari and Nao Hibino. However, she was beaten by Jessica Pegula in a rematch of her Yarra Valley opening-round game. The World No. 53 moved on to end her Australian Open series in the same way she started – a first-round loss to Jil Teichmann in the Adelaide International.

The previous season was quite uneventful for Mladenovic as she slipped out of the top 50 after a mediocre spell on the tour. To put things in perspective, her recent third-round run in Melbourne was the first time that she had reached that stage in a WTA competition since the Kremlin Cup in 2019.

That said, Kristina is a terrific doubles player as she won the Australian Open and French Open doubles last year with Timea Babos. On her best day, she can be a highly formidable player and can certainly tap into her doubles experience to make things difficult for Gasparyan.

Gasparyan in with a Positive Start

Gasparyan joined the Lyon Open as a qualifier and on the back of some brilliant tennis, she fought her way to the main draw.

In her first-round bout, she met Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine and beat her 6-4, 6-1 in a little under 90 minutes. Throughout the course of the match, Gasparyan looked in absolute control and confident. With that win, she has also delivered the best run of her season so far.

The Russian last played in the Australian Open where she battled her way through the three qualifying matches, only to lose to Garbine Muguruza in the first round of the main draw.

Currently ranked World No. 131, Gasparyan started her year in the Gippsland Trophy where she lost her opening-round game to Polona Hercog.

In many ways, Gasparyan is in the same boat as Mladenovic except that her runs are halted mainly in the qualifying rounds. Even her last season was along the same lines as that of Mladenovic as she slipped down further in the rankings.

Mladenovic vs Gasparyan Prediction and Tip

On the whole, Mladenovic has far more winning experience than her Russian adversary but she is likely to get a good fight. Expect Kristina to win this game in three sets.

Tip: Mladenovic to win 2-1: 3/1 (bet365)
