Daniil Medvedev v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

The only previous match played between these two players came at the 2020 Marseille Open and Medvedev had needed to overcome a set deficit to defeat Sinner.

Medvedev Shrugs off Rotterdam Loss

It was a shocking loss that Medvedev suffered from in Rotterdam, going down in straight sets to Dusan Lajovic in the first round about a week or so ago.

Here was a player on a 20-match winning streak before that defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open. And suddenly, Medvedev suffered a second successive loss, losing to another Serb in the form of Lajovic.

Which is why the comfort of a straight-set win in a match lasting an hour and 12 minutes against Egor Gerasimov would please Medvedev; a sign of getting that winning mojo back after having seemingly lost it earlier.

The top seed served flawlessly, getting 96% of his first serves in and winning 75% of those points. As a result of that, Medvedev didn’t face a single break-point which in turn getting himself four of them and breaking his opponent thrice.

With a world number two ranking at stake for Medvedev, he sure looks like he has begun well in this tournament. What needs to be seen is if he break his previous best showing in Marseille, a quarterfinal appearance in both 2020 and 2017.

Sinner Settles Back after Tough Opener

Having won the title at the Great Ocean Road Open, the young, but talented Sinner would have given himself a good chance of going the distance at the following Australian Open. Unfortunately for him, drawn to play Denis Shapovalov in the opening round there, he fell in five sets to the Canadian.

This was followed by another loss in the first round, this time in Montpellier to Aljaz Bedene, who was 7/2 to win the encounter, making it a slightly perplexing turn of events for Sinner.

He didn’t begin too well in this tournament in Marseille either, needing three sets and two tie-breakers to get past Gregoire Barrerre in his opener here. Which is why his performance in the second round against Hugo Gaston would have come as a hug relief with Sinner dropping just five games in the encounter.

Can he now challenge a player of the calibre of Medvedev in this encounter?

Medvedev v Sinner Prediction and Tip

It won’t come as too much of a surprise to see Medvedev being an overwhelming favourite in this one with the Russian starting out at 3/10 to clinch this. Sinner can be expected to be a thorn in his opponent’s flesh but can he actually win a set here?

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
