Andrey Rublev v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

At the highest level, which includes one Davis Cup match, the scoreline between the eighth-ranked Rublev and the world number 13 Agut is tied at 2-2.

The Spaniard had won their first two matches, in Valencia and Shanghai, while Rublev edged out Bautista-Agut in the 2019 Davis Cup before beating him again in Hemburg last season.

They had also faced off at an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2018, with Bautista-Agut winning that encounter.

Rublev Continues to Wait…

…for his first opponent. Yep, that’s correct, he has reached the semifinal without having lifted his tennis racquet and that has to be one bizarre occurrence.

Rublev, like some of the other seeded players had a first round bye, but has then benefitted from injury issues to his opponents. The Russian, who came into this tournament with a title win at the Rotterdam Open under his belt, was to face Richard Gasquet in his second round match here.

Gasquet withdrew from their match and that was followed by another withdrawal before his quarterfinal, by Marton Fucsovics.

What it does is to keep Rublev’s win-loss record down to 13-1 – it could well have been 15 wins to one defeat by now – as he continues to remain a big thorn in the flesh of most opponents.

Rublev, whose only defeat this year, has come to Danill Medvedev in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, will now face a challenging opponent in his semifinal match. Will these four days off tennis actually help or will the frustration of having not played any tennis this week be a cause for concern?

Bautista-Agut Stuns Thiem

It was a shocking day, not the least because Roger Federer was sent out packing by Nikoloz Basilashvili in his quarterfinal earlier on Thursday. Bautista-Agut made it two shocks in two when he stunned Dominic Thiem in a tough three-setter to set up this meeting with Rublev.

Bautista-Agut won a tight encounter 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 in a tournament he has won before, getting a crucial break of serve in the fifth game of the final set. From there on, Thiem tried his best but could just not get the better of the Bautista-Agut serve.

Earlier in the tournament, Bautista-Agut had started off with a battle-hardening win against Reilly Opelka and then sent Alexander Bublik packing in the second round in straight sets.

The Spaniard now faces the one of the toughest matches of his season – he had faced Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Cup before this; a solid result in this could signal Bautista-Agut’s fully back after a prolonged struggle in 2020.

Rublev v Bautista-Agut Prediction and Tip

Rublev is 4/9 to win this but what could go against him in this one is his lack of game playing time. We had spoken of how refreshed he might be but is now facing a battle-hardened Bautista-Agut, which could be the difference.

Tip: Games Handicap Bautista-Agut +3.5: 4/5 (bet365)
