Daniel Elahi Galan v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head
All of their previous three encounters have come at the Challenger circuit, with Galan having won two of them. Baena’s only win came in their previous meeting, in 2020 in the semifinal of the Campinas Challenger.
All three matches were played on clay too.

Galan’s Best Result Since French Open
It hasn’t been since the 2020 French Open that Galan won back to back matches at a tournament at the highest level. There, he had defeated Cameron Norrie and Tennys Sandgren in the first two rounds, before going down to the rampaging Novak Djokovic in the third.
Since then, Galan has played in a plethora of Challenger competitions but at the highest level, he has barely won anything. At the Delray Beach Open early in the season for instance, Galan made the second round but lost to Hubert Hurkacz.
At the Cordoba Open recently, the 121st-ranked Colombian fell in the first round itself. And even in the four Challenger tournaments he did play in, Galan won just two of his six matches.
Which is why, back to back wins here at the Santiago Open, both against favourites, would give him a lot of confidence. He started off with a straight-set victory over Daniel Altmaier and followed it up with an upset win over Pablo Andujar in the second.
It now remains to be seen how he goes against a player who has won one ATP title in his career.

Baena’s Record Similar to His Opponent’s
It’s interesting to note that the last time Baena also won back to back matches in a tournament came at the French Open last season! He made the third round there before having to retire from his encounter against Grigor Dimitrov because of a stomach-related injury.
Since then, Baena has participated in a truckload of Challenger competitions and done reasonably well – he was a finalist at the Campinas Challenger – but when it comes to the highest level, his record has generally been underwhelming.
This year, Baena had played in four ATP tournaments before this one, losing in the first round at two of them and the second in the other two. Which is why, straight set wins over Salvatore Caruso and Juan Manuel Cerundolo would be bit of a relief for the Spaniard.
The question is if he can now go further on to make it to his first ATP semifinal since the 2018 Quito Open.
Galan v Baena Prediction and Tip
Baena holds a very slight edge in this one and we are backing him to overcome Galan in three sets here.
Tip: Baena to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
