Humbert Looking To Play Final On Home Soil

22-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert had a favorable 2020 beginning the year claiming his first title at the Auckland ATP 250. After the Covid hiatus, the Frenchman had a good run during the indoor European season winning eight matches in a row and claiming the European Open title.

The Frenchman ended the year ranked number 30 in the world and along with a host of others has been earmarked as one of the Next Gen to look out for.  After an indifferent Melbourne ATP 250, Humbert looked good in his second round Aussie Open encounter against Nick Kyrgios where he was up match point in the fourth set. A mix of nerves and crowd pressure saw the Aussie prevail as the Frenchman capitulated.

A quarter-finalist in Montpellier, Humbert did not have a good week at Rotterdam losing in the opening round to in-form French veteran Jerimy Chardy. Humbert has looked better this week prevailing against all Frenchmen again; a convincing win against another veteran J0-Wilfried Tsonga and a hard fought one against another rising star in Arthur Rinderknech.

Herbert Upsets Two Time Defending Champion Tsitsipas

Doubles specialist and winner of all major titles as a doubles player, Pierre- Hugues Herbert has looked to focus more on his singles game beginning 2019. The Frenchman has met with success on the faster hard, indoor and grass courts.

Having broken into the top 50 on the singles tour and reached a career high number 36 , he has fallen to just within the top 100 in the world, as he seeks a revival.

The 2021 season did not get off to the best of starts for the Frenchman, with opening round losses at Antalya and the Australian Open, and only winning one match at the ATP 250 in Melbourne.

Returning to the indoor European courts where he has done well in the past, Herbert pulled out of Montpellier and after looking in decent form in his Rotterdam opener, lost in straight sets to finalist-to-be Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.

This week has been considerably better for the Frenchman with a straight sets win against Japanese veteran on a comeback trail, Kei Nishikori, followed by another seamless victory against the in-form Briton Cameron Norrie setting up a quarter-final against the two time defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas who is in the midst of a good 2021 run.

The match was off to a cracker with a tight first set with the Greek winning the breaker 8-6. Herbert upped his level after and forced the Tsitsipas game to crack and not only equalized the match with the second set 6-4, but played a very aggressive decided to win the match 6-2 and end Tstisipas’ hopes of a Three-Peter here at Marseille.

Humbert v Herbert Prediction and Tip

While this may have been a slightly unexpected semi-final, both players have looked good this week and deserve to be here. It will come down to who is better on the day, but young Humbert seems to have been considerably more consistent in recent times. Expect a tight three setter with Humbert prevailing.

Tip: Humbert to win in three sets : 3/1 (bet365)
