John Isner v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between 35-year-old John Isner and 28-year-old Salvatore Caruso.

Isner Playing In His Second Tournament of 2021

After skipping the 2021 Australian Open due to extensive coronavirus restrictions, American John Isner will return to action at the forthcoming Mexican Open in Acapulco.

At this stage of his career, Isner admitted he does not want to be away from his kids for an extended period. The 35-year-old would not have been able to travel with his entire entourage including his family, which prompted that eyebrow-raising decision. Prior to this year, Isner had played in 12 of the last 13 Australian Opens in his career.

So far, Isner’s tennis campaign in 2021 has been massively affected. He has been limited to a single tournament participation, which was in Delray at the start of January. He won a round of 16 match against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro, but surprisingly lost to fellow American Sebastian Korda in the quarterfinals.

The North Carolinian has been extremely vocal on his social media pages regarding news that this year’s Miami Open will have a substantial decrease in prize money.

Isner, who is a former Miami Open champion slammed the ATP ‘a broken system’, and called upon a thorough audit in the financial status of all tournaments.

Far from it, the former world no.8 will need to bounce back and fast when he makes his sixth appearance in Mexico. He made the semifinals in his last two visits, losing to Nick Kyrgios and Taylor Fritz respectively.

An Underwhelming Golden Swing for Caruso

Tennis is a game of fine margins. And sometimes you wonder if Salvatore Caruso’s season would have taken a different itinerary had he crossed the finish line in his Australian Open second round match.

Having reached the third round in his previous hard court Slam at the US Open in 2020, Caruso was attempting to repeat his exploits Down Under. He competed fiercely against compatriot Fabio Fognini, and even held match point in the super tiebreak in the fifth set, but could not vanquish his experienced countryman.

Instead, what ought to have been one of his best wins in his career turned into a chaotic moment soon after, when the players entangled into a war of words. There is no love lost between the pair, but Caruso has lost his mojo since that encounter.

Caruso’s Golden Swing was barren, as he made first round exits in Buenos Aires and Santiago. He was beaten by Gianluca Mager and Roberto Carballes Baena, which in fairness, are tough first round match ups on clay.

Will a change in surface bring a relative change in results for the Italian, who is seeking a first win in three matches?

Isner v Caruso Prediction and Tip

Isner hasn’t played in two months, and it is difficult to gauge the form he is in at the moment. Caruso’s form on hard courts this year has been decent and he was unlucky not to reach the third round at the Australian Open. Backing the games market seems like a smart choice here.

Tip: Over 21.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
