Jan-Lennard Struff v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head
There have been four previous matches played between these two players including two in the qualifiers stage of competitions. Struff leads 3-1 but the good news for Kukushkin is he had won their latest encounter which came in 2019 at Wimbledon.
Incidentally tat win over Struff had taken Kukushkin to the fourth round there, his best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

Struff Struggling in Recent Times
The German Struff looked like he had made the kind of start he wanted to in the season, winning three of the first five matches he played this season apart from getting a walkover in one of the rounds as well to help him reach the quarterfinal of the Antalya Open.
Since then, however, things have gone rather pear-shaped for the German, as he’s fallen to four successive defeats.
The first of those losses had come at the hands of Andrey Rublev at the ATP Cup, so that wasn’t too much of a surprise but what has followed in the next two matches has been surprising. In both those matches, his opponents were 2/1 or more to win it and still managed to go through against him.
Most recently, Struff fell to David Goffin 6-4, 6-0 at the Rotterdam Open opening round and now has a bit of a mountain to climb if he wants to overturn the recent record.

Kukushkin’s Won Just One
Having fallen to outside the top 90 on the ATP circuit, it comes as no surprise that Kukushkin had had to resort to playing at the Challengers and qualifiers of events to try and get his season going. And so far, things haven’t looked very good.
It started with a first round win at the Murray River Open but followed with a second round defeat to Stan Wawrinka in that very tournament. Dominic Thiem took care of him in the Australian Open opener, and he then lost three successive first round matches, first at two of the Challengers and then in Marseille.
And it’s taken two, very low-ranked opponents for Kukushkin to make his way through to the main draw of this tournament as well.
So while Struff himself hasn’t had too much form going, Kukushkin won’t have it easy at all.

This looks like a straight-set win coming up for Struff, who should overpower the off-colour Kazakh in this opener.
