Vera Zvonareva v Arina Rodionova Head to Head

Their only previous outing came as recently as the 2020 French Open which was won by Zvonareva in the second qualifying round there. She took the match 6-0, 6-4.

Zvonareva 3-3 in Main Draws This Season

For a player ranked 146th in the world, Zvonareva’s record this season hasn’t been as bad as it could have been. Her talent has never been in doubt, but the former world number two and veteran of nearly two decades of tennis has shown fighting capabilities in the more recent past which have held her in a solid stead despite her ranking.

Which is how she made it to the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open in January and then went on to overcome Kristyna Pliskova and Caroline Dolehide in the first two rounds of the tune-up tournament in Melbourne for the Australian Open.

While Zvonareva lost in the opening round at the Australian Open itself – she was facing Elena Rybakina there – and then failed to qualify for the WTA Dubai, Zvonareva’s fighting spirit should take her into this encounter against an Aussie ranked behind her with a lot of confidence.

Rodionova’s Not Won a Main Draw in Ages

It was in the 2020 edition of the Australian Open, played in January that Rodionova last won a match in the main draw of WTA competitions. First round losses and worse still, inability to qualify for the main draw of competitions have inflicted her since then and her ranking has plummetted from 148th in the world to 172nd right now despite the big tweak in the ranking system which makes it difficult to lose points.

This year has been no better for the Aussie.

She started off the season with three back to back home tournaments, and lost in the first round at the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open and then failed to move past the qualifying stages of the Adelaide International. A similar fate befell on her in the qualifiers at the WTA Dubai and it’s only here in Russia she has finally managed to win back to back matches in the qualifiers despite starting off as second favourite to move into the main draw.

Will she break her duck though?

Zvonareva v Rodionova Prediction and Tip

While Zvonareva can be expected to romp home here, the odds on offer from bet365 are something to beckon. The Russian is a whopping 1/10 to win this as compared to 6/1 for a Rodionova victory and while there is a stark difference between the two players, it does seem like one can work on the Games Handicap with those odds.

Tip: Games Handicap Rodionova +6.5: 8/11 (bet365)
