Mediocre Start to the Season for Podoroska
For a player whose fortunes swung so delightfully in 2020 when she went from a season low of 258th rank to a year-ending ranking of 47th thanks to her excellent performances all year, Podoroska will be slightly disappointed with the way things have gone this year.
The Argentine’s best showing came at the Yarra Valley Classic Cup where she won three matches to make it as far as the quarterfinal, and that included a win over Petra Kvitova as well. However, there hasn’t been much else to write home about.
In two of the four other tournaments she has played this season, Podoroska has crashed out in the first round, losing both times to a lower-ranked player and in the other two competitions, she went out in the second round. Again, those defeats came against the run of play, i.e. with the bookmakers having backed Podoroska to win them.
She has a good chance of starting off strongly to give herself a boost in the arm, given her opponent in this encounter ranked nearly 90 places behind her and out of form. The bigger question would be for later – can Podoroska go deeper into this competition.

Kalinskaya Gunning for 2019 Form
Things have really tapered away for Kalinskaya in recent times, who last won a main draw match at the US Open last season. Since then, Kalinskaya has gone through off and on-court issues, with results having gone against her as a result.
Last season she failed to qualify for the Italian Open and then fell in the first round of the French Open. Kalinskaya followed it up with a qualifier defeat at the Australian Open, and following that suffered back to back opening round losses at the Gippsland Trophy and Guadalajara Open after that.
Here at the Monterrey Open, Kalinskaya has qualified for the main draw with back to back wins but even those have come against players ranked quite low on the WTA ladder. Her real test will come now when she takes on a player who last year made it as far as the semifinal of the French Open as a qualifier.
Can Kalinskaya win a match here as a qualifier too?
Podoroska v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip
While Podoroska is the obvious favourite to win this, and 8/15 to do that, we think a better deal would be for the Argentine to win in two. Kalinskaya’s form isn’t the best at the moment and backing Podoroska to come through easily.
Tip: Podoroska to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
