Lorenzo Sonego v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head

This will be the first time that Sonego and Karatsev will be facing off in a competitive match.

Sonego Finally Breaks the Losing Spree

First the good news. Sonego, who had risen to world number 32 as his career-best ranking, had come into this tournament on the back of a three-match losing streak but has finally broken that streak.

With a bye in the first round, Sonego wasted no time in getting past Bernabe Zapata Miralles, defeating him 6-2, 6-2 to roll into the third round.

The not-so-good news is Sonego’s win came up against a player whose career-best ranking has been 142nd, and was a second favourite by some distance in that encounter.

Now comes the real test for the Italian though. Not only is his opponent not ranked outside the top 100 like his previous one, but is also coming off a solid showing at the Australian Open.

That, combined with Sonego’s lackadaisical form in recent times, which has seen him win back to back matches in a tournament just once this season, could test out the Italian.

In-Form Karatsev Marches On

The Australian Open campaign earlier this year was Karatsev’s first tournament of the season. He had qualified for the tournament before bull-dozing multiple top opponents to qualify for the semifinal where he finally met his match in the form of the world number one.

In Doha, which was where Karatsev played his second competition this year, he eased into the second round where it took Dominic Thiem the loss of a set to usurp the Russian. And now in Dubai, he has already had no issues getting past Egor Gerasimov but faced a stumbling block in the form of Dan Evans in the second round.

Now Evans doesn’t belong to the same bracket as Djokovic or Thiem, but is ranked 28th in the world and has already won a title this season. Which is why when Karatsev took two hours and 24 minutes to get past Evans, it was both unsurprising and one of those occasions when he managed to grit out a victory instead of blasting out his opponent.

Which is also why Karatsev would have now gained the confidence to come back from sticky situations, making him less one-dimensional than otherwise. Will be a tough cookie to crack.

Sonego v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

No surprises who’s the favourite here, with Karatsev starting out at 4/6 to clinch this and we are backing him to do just and make it to the last eight.

Tip: Karatsev to win: 4/6 (bet365)
