Jelena Ostapenko v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

Ostapenko and Cristian haven’t played each other before this.

Ostapenko Makes Mincemeat of Badosa

Not that Paula Badosa was a favourite going into her opening round match in this tournament but the manner in which Ostapenko pummelled her in straight sets in their opening round match on Tuesday, it did seem like the Latvian was on a mission.

Ostapenko needed a mere 56 minutes to register a crushing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Badosa, breaking the world number 70 four times in the entire match. What sealed this as a one-sided contest then was Ostapenko not facing a single break-point in the encounter.

It was late in January that Ostapenko had kick-started season with a couple of wins at the Gippsland Trophy before she had fallen to Elina Svitolina in the third round there. A first round loss at the Australian Open, and back to back second round defeats in Dubai and Doha mean Ostapenko is yet to get past two successive wins in a competition this season.

This could be a very good chance for the Latvian player to make it back to back victories as she now faces an opponent who has had to qualify for the tournament and has never seen the inside of the top 150 on the WTA Rankings..

Cristian in a Rare Chance of Successive Wins

It was nearly a year ago when Cristian had qualified for a tournament main draw and then carved out a win in the opening round of the tournament. Since then, she hadn’t won a match again and the absence of that feeling could be seen in the manner in which she kept getting routed in her first round matches.

Cristian started out with an opening round victory over Vera Lapko, after the latter retired from their encounter in the third set of the contest. After losing the first set in a tie-breaker, Cristian then proceeded to get a decisive break of serve in the seventh game of the second set.

And when Cristian broke her opponent yet again early in the third set, Lapko was forced to retire from the contest because of fitness concerns. Cristian led 2-1 at that stage.

Having lost in the first round of the qualifiers at the Australian Open, Lyon Open and Dubai International, this was a welcome victory for the Romanian, a first in a long while as well.

Ostapenko v Cristian Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko is a whopping 1/5 to win this which is what the Latvian will look to instill a chance to fight back home in a contest. Cristian can be expected to put up a fight, which is why the games handicap market looks quite delicious.

Tip: Games Handicap Cristian +5.5: 4/5 (bet365)
