Dusan Lajovic v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

Last week’s first round meeting in Doha marked the first time Lajovic and Fucsovics have met on tour. The Hungarian world no.44 won in straight sets.

Lajovic Continues to Tumble

Since the turn of the year Dusan Lajovic has been taking toddler steps, and continues to tumble. With five wins in the current campaign, three of them were recorded in that brilliant run to the fourth round of the Australian Open. It was his major highlight of what has been a rocky start to 2021.

Defeats have come thick and fast since the Australian summer series ended. A first round defeat to Dennis Novak in Montpellier was a huge surprise considering the gulf in rankings.

The Serbian did a mighty impressive work the week after, upsetting Daniil Medvedev in the first round of Rotterdam at astronomical odds. But that victory over the Russian was just a flash in the pan as he was beaten easily in the second round by Borna Coric.

This is a peculiar time for Lajovic to be playing hard court tennis. After all, the one-handed Belgrade native has always been a busy fixture in the South American Golden Swing down the years. Lajovic has tweaked his schedule, and is now playing the Middle Eastern swing. He won his first match in Dubai against Tunisian wildcard Malek Jaziri 7-5 6-2.

It was the Serb’s most comfortable day in the office this year. He produced a dominant performance on his serve and returns, winning over 80% behind both his first and second deliveries. Throughout the contest, he did not face a single break point.

Fucsovics Building Momentum

A return to the world’s top 50 was perhaps the least of Marton Fucsovic’s new season’s resolutions. However, after making a tremendous start to the year everything is ticking in the right direction for the tenacious Hungarian.

Fucsovics is slowly but surely building up momentum as showcased in his run to the final in Rotterdam, in which accounted for six of his 13 match wins so far this season. Although he competed bravely against the in-form Andrey Rublev, he was denied by the Russian’s superior firepower.

While many expected Fucsovic’s form to head into a tailspin, it has been the exact opposite. He mastered two wins in Doha over Lajovic and Lloyd Harris to move into double digits in terms of match wins, before pulling out from his rematch against Rublev in the quarterfinals.

Fucsovic showed no signs of physical discomfort in Dubai. He earned a first round win over the struggling Vasek Pospisil, extending his winning streak over the big-serving Canadian to three matches. But it was his second round win over Pablo Carreno Busta which was the more impressive.

The new world no.44 secured a comeback win over the Spaniard in a match that lasted two hours and 23 minutes. He won over 70% of both first and second serve points. After an opening set that was decided in a tiebreak, Fucsovics defended extremely well from the back of the court, fending off four out five break points on his serve.

Lajovic v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Lajovic’s form is a far cry from his Australian Open breakthrough. But we should expect him to summon his best tennis in Dubai, which is playing similar to Melbourne courts this year. As good as Fucsovics’ runs have been lately, that victory over Carreno Busta will take its toll on his body for this one.

Tip: Lajovic to win: 8/11 (bet365)
