Milos Raonic v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Raonic and the 71st-ranked Koepfer.

Raonic Tames Tommy Paul

It took Raonic some tricky moments and an hour and 49 minutes but he managed to get past Tommy Paul in straight sets to clinch his second round berth. Raonic won 7-6 (6), 6-4 in a match of fine margins against his talented American opponent.

The first set went on serve throughout but that wasn’t before Paul saved a break-point at 2-3 and 3-4 and then thwarted two set-points at 4-5 as well, to take the set into a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker as well, it went on serve till 3-3 when Raonic drew first blood to take a 5-3 lead.

The pair exchanged mini-breaks to give Raonic two set-points, and while he convert either, he soon got a third in the tie-breaker that he did convert and carved out a win.

The second set swung like a pendulum with Raonic breaking twice to go 3-0 up and then exchanging another pair of serves to take a 5-1 lead. The Canadian failed to serve for the match at the first go at 5-2 but then managed to advance by doing it on his service game.

Raonic had earlier made it as far as the fourth round of the Australian Open following on from a 1-1 win-loss record at the ATP Cup.

Koepfer Mauls Mexican in Opener

Ranked 71st in the world, Koepfer took full advantage of the luck of his draw as he got past Mexico’s wild-card entry and world number 563 Gerardo Lopez Villasenor in straight sets. Kopefer needed an hour and seven minutes to carve out a 6-4, 6-2 victory over his opponent and advance to the second round, his third such entry this year.

Earlier, Koepfer had also made it as far as that at the Australian Open and then repeated the same in the Buenos Aires Open but the underlying theme in both those wins was the same as this one – an opponent way lower than him.

There have been first round exits too for the German. He failed to survive the Christopher O’Connelle onslaught at the the Great Ocean Road Open, and then fell in the opener at Cordoba. What he would now like is to test out Raonic, something he hasn’t been able to do to the top players this season.

Raonic v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

This looks like a fairly straightforward result for Raonic and he starts out at 1/5 to win this and 1/2 to do that in straight sets. The latter looks most likely.

Tip: Raonic to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
