Li Ann had last played in the Australian Open and having reached the third round there and lost to Aryna Sabalenka, she had been out of action. Till the American returned to featured in this competition.
Having also made it to the semifinals at the Grampians Trophy in the lead-up to the Australian Open before the competition was called off, it meant that Li had a 6-1 win-loss record to kick-start the season – her best on the circuit.
Which is why despite having not played in over a month, Li started off as a favourite against Arantxa Rus and surely enough played like one too. She needed an hour and 17 minutes to win the encounter 6-3, 7-5. In doing so, Li Ann saved eight of the nine break-points she faced, while breaking Rus thrice, including one at 5-5 in the second set before serving it out to love.

Clay Court Specialist Zidansek 4-4 This Year
For someone with two clay court titles at the WTA $125k level and 14 of her 17 ITF tournament wins also coming on red dirt, it’s fair to assume Zidansek’s preference is always to play on clay. That being said, Zidansek has done reasonably well so far this season especially considering all her matches have come on hard courts.
Zidansek started the season with a third round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open, followed it up with back to back opening exits and then a second round appearance last week at the Guadalajara Open.
What should give Zidansek some confidence is her victories this season, even before she sent Renata Zarazua packing in the first round here came against Jennifer Brady, Leylah Fernandez and Anna Blinkova.
Those are difficult opponents in their own right and for the 93rd-ranked Zidansek to clinch those wins goes a long way in boosting her morale coming into this second round match.
