Zvonareva Edges Ferro in An Epic

In one of the longest matches of the season, Vera Zvonareva rolled back the years to thrill the home faithful with a marathon 6-7 7-5 7-6 win over France’s Fiona Ferro, in the longest match in St. Petersburg history – three hours and 10 minutes.

Zvonareva was foiled in her attempt to serve for the opening set after making a bright start to the match. She produced an untimely double fault while serving at 5-4, allowing Ferro swipe her way back into the match. The Frenchwoman obliged an momentum was on her side, eventually taking the ensuing tiebreak.

The paradigm repeated itself in the second set. The 36-year-old wildcard was broken while serving for the set at 5-3, with Ferro producing an instant return winner. But the Russian veteran showed great resolve as she steadied herself through the mud. Fittingly, Zvonareva found an extra gear to level the contest.

After exchanging breaks early in the third set, both players seemed to have signed the dotted line of a final set tiebreak to decide the contest. Ferro, who had been painting the lines all evening, became erratic in the tiebreak. Surprisingly, it was the 36-year-old who showed admirable court coverage to get over the finish line.

Gasanova Shocks Pavlyuchenkova

It has been a dream week for Anastasia Gasanova. From qualifying to quarterfinal at the WTA St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, and it has been quite a story.

Before this year Gasanova had never played a match in the main draw of a WTA event, let alone winning one. However, she eradicated that, after qualifying successfully at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open at the start of January. There, she mastered Mona Barthel and undoubtedly the biggest win of her career in beating Karolina Pliskova.

Gasanova was made to wait for a second bite of the tour-level cherry. After oscillating continents playing ITF events, she returned home and almost symbolically again, needed to do it the hard way to get into the main draw of a WTA tournament. She beat Laura-loana Paar and Ana Konjuh in qualifying to guarantee her spot among Russia’s elite.

This week, Gasanova played the two longest matches in the tournament’s history in St. Petersburg. First up she beat Katarina Zavatska in a match that crossed the three-hour mark, winning 6-2 6-7 7-5. But she backed up that win with another almighty tussle against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.

Gasanova won fewer total points (119 to 129) in comparison to her experienced opponent, fired less winners (25 to 44), garnered less breaks of serve (5 to 7). But she won the points that mattered. Her 1-6 7-6 7-6 victory over the struggling Pavlyuchenkova was one minute shy of three hours.

Zvonareva v Gasanova Prediction and Tip

The odds will be stacked heavily against Gasanova after coming through two marathon three-hour matches. It would be a tough ask for the 21-year-old to progress, especially when you consider Zvonareva is coming off a day’s rest for this one.

Tip: Zvonareva to win: 1/4 (bet365)
