Margarita Gasparyan v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head

Their only previous match before this came in the qualifiers of this very tournament last season and Zvonareva had needed three sets to get past Gasparyan.

Gasparyan Stuns Alexandrova

Gasparyan is a two-time WTA champion but her form in recent times has been anything but champion-like. Which is why, a run like this to the semifinal would both be a confidence-booster and bit of a relief for the Russian, who has fallen from her career-best of 41st in the world to her current ranking of 141.

Having failed to qualify for this tournament last season, Gasparyan got a wild-card into the main draw for this one and proceeded to overcome three players, all of whom were favourites in those respective matches.

Kristina Mladenovic managed to push Gasparyan to a third set but she then crushed Katerina Siniakova and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets to make it to the semifinals.

The quarterfinal against the 34th-ranked Alexandrova lasted an hour and 21 minutes, with Gasparyan breaking her opponent a whopping six times across the encounter.

The first set was one-way traffic for Gasparyan but the good news for her is she managed to take the fight to the opposition even in the second set when the chips were down. Alexandrova broke first, but Gasparyan broke back and while she had a chance to serve for the match at 5-3 and dropped her serve, she broke Alexandrova in the 12th game to complete a straight-set win.

Zvonareva Eases Past Gasanova

Having beaten Arina Rodionova in her opener and then surprised Fiona Ferro in the second, Zvonareva was faced with a slightly easier, on-paper opponent in the form of Anatasia Gasanova.

Zvonareva was 1/5 favourite to win her quarterfinal, and she lived up to those odds nicely, beating fellow Russian Gasanova 6-3, 6-1 to seal her first WTA semifinal since having made it that far in 2019 in this very tournament.

The match lasted an hour and 25 minutes, saw Zvonareva break her opponent five times and staved off six off the seven break-points she herself faced in the encounter.

Gasanova’s only break of serve came in the first game of the second set but once Zvonareva broke right back, she wrested back the initiative with six successive games from there on to complete the victory.

Gasparyan v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

Zvonareva is the favourite here at 4/7 but we believe this is bit of a coin-toss with Gasparyan’s power-packed game stirring the pot a tad. Three-setter expected.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
