This will be the first meeting between the World No. 88 Fernandez and World No. 102 Golubic.

Fernandez Ends Sorribes Tormo’s Win Streak

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez ended Sara Sorribes Tormo’s seven-match win streak on Saturday, as the Canadian ousted the Spaniard in the semifinal of the Monterrey Open to reach her second WTA final.

The 18-year-old Canadian stuck 35 winners on her way to a 7-5, 7-5 win over the seventh seed.

Fernandez saved six of 10 break points, and converted six of nine, as she ended last week’s Guadalajara champion’s bid for a second career final.

Fernandez, who was a quarterfinalist on her tournament debut in Monterrey last year, began this year’s campaign with 6-3, 6-2 win over America’s CoCo Vandeweghe.

She defeated Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16 and then ousted another Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Saturday’s win improved the Canadian to 7-4 in 2021. The Australian Open was the only tournament where she failed to win a match this year. In all the other three tournaments, she won her first match but lost in the next round.

The World No. 88 Fernandez had an impressive 2020 season, which included a run to her first career final in Acapulco, which she lost to Heather Watson in three.

Golubic In Second Final of the Year

In the final on Sunday, Fernandez will meet Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, who became the first qualifier to reach the final in the tournament’s history, as she knocked out eight seed Ann Li of America in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Swiss, who reached the final in Lyon two weeks ago, struck 21 winners on her way to a 6-2, 6-4 win over the 20-year-old American.

Ranked 102 in the world, Golubic has displayed terrific form this season and improved to 8-1 in main draws this year following her semifinal win on Saturday. She is 12-1 over the last three weeks, including the qualifiers in Lyon and Monterrey.

Golubic also featured in three ITF events this year, winning the title in France, finishing runner-up in the UAE and reaching the semifinal in Germany.

The Swiss, one of the few women with a one-handed backhand, entered the main draw with straight-set wins over Mexico’s Anna Sofia Sanchez and compatriot Leonie Kung in the two qualifying rounds.

The 28-year-old then knocked out Russia’s sixth seed Anna Blinkova 6-4, 6-4 in the first round and America’s Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 16, before going past another Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Golubic, who reached a career-high ranking of 51 in 2017, had reached two finals in 2016, winning in Gstaad and finishing runner-up in Linz. Five years on, she has reached two more finals in 2021.

Two weeks ago, playing as a qualifier in Lyon, Golubic upset third seed Caroline Garcia and second seed Fiona Ferro en route to the final, where she fell to Denmark’s Clara Tauson.

Fernandez v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Both players are in tremendous form and have reached the final without dropping a set. So expect this to be a close contest. However, given how Golubic has gone this season she will hold a slight edge in the final and there is a chance of her winning her second WTA title.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
