Svetlana Kuznetsova v Alize Cornet Head to Head
This will be the sixth match between Kuznetsova and Cornet on the WTA tour, and seventh overall. Kuznetsova is 3-2 on head to head at the highest level and but it’s 3-3 when one includes a Fed Cup match that was played in 2011.
The last time they had faced off in a competitive match was in 2017 in Wuhan and Cornet had come through in straight sets.

After having begun the season with opening round exits at two of the three tournaments she played in, Kuznetsova has shown some kind of a turnaround in form in the more recent two competitions.
At the WTA Dubai, she edged out Wang Qiang and Elina Svitolina in the first two rounds of the tournament, and then fell to Barbora Krejcikova in the third round. This was followed by the home competition where a first round bye in St. Petersburg was followed by wins over Xinyu Wang and Jaqueline Cristian – both of these matches saw her start off as a favourite.
In the semifinal there, however, Kuznetsova lost to the eventual champion Daria Kasatkina, who overturned a poor first set, to crash into her party 6-0, 6-2.
A 2006 winner here in Miami and a finalist as recently as in 2016 when she defeated Serena Williams in the fourth round en route losing to Victoria Azarenka in the title-decider, Kuznetsova will now now hope she can do much better than her second round exit at her previous appearance here.

Cornet Struggling for Form
Having reached as far as the third round at the Cincinnati Open and the fourth round in the US Open last season, Cornet would have expected a lot better from her return this season.
Instead she has won just four of the 10 matches she has played this year, losing in the second round at four of the six tournaments and crashing out in the first at the remaining two.
The Frenchwoman, most recently, played in Dubai, and was knocked out in the second round of that competition by Aryna Sabalenka, having earlier beaten Kasatkina. What makes this interesting is Kasatkina had more recently ousted Kuznetsova, making it difficult to predict what might happen when Cornet takes on the Russian.
Cornet, who had lost her openers to Kimberly Birrell Clara Burel in her last two first round matches, would have a fight on her hands here given her form issues.

Kuznetsova would like to do better than she has in recent times but she looks to have enough firepower in her tank to get past Cornet in this one.
