Kalinskaya Improves after Monterrey Showing
Russia’s Kalinskaya had broken into the top 100 back in August 2019 after a solid showing at the US Open but since then her lack of performances have been telling. Not surprisingly, she had fallen to 130th going into the Monterrey Open last week.
What was surprising, as a result, was the manner in which Kalinskaya came through the qualifiers at the Monterrey Open and then overcame two of her opponents in the main draw of that competition to make it to the last eight for some time. Kalinskaya first crushed Nadia Podoroska in round one 6-4, 6-4, before overcoming Nina Stojanovic in the second round by a similar scoreline.
It took the eventual finalist Viktorija Golubic to send Kalinskaya out, with the Russian losing 2-6, 4-6 but not before she had improved to 115th in the ranking. What Kalinskaya would now hope for is to get a solid result here in Miami, in a tournament she has never played before this.
She takes on an opponent ranked 41 places above her and one in decent form at that.

Begu Hoping for More Consistency
This is not to say Begu has had a poor start to the season but the former world number 22 would hope to make deeper runs more consistently if she needs to get back to her best.
Currently, she has fallen to 74th in the world, which is still an improvement over her season low of 79th and that has been down to her performances at the Gippsland Trophy and the Phillip Island Trophy.
At both those tournaments, Begu managed three wins to make it to the last eight, getting past the likes of Johanna Konta and Wang Qiang before losing in the next round to Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu respectively.
Against a player ranked outside the top 100, Begu should not have too many worries but will want to start strong given Kalinskaya’s form.
Kalinskaya v Begu Prediction and Tip
Kalinskaya is 5/3 to win this which gives us an opportunity to go with set handicap or if she can win a set here or no and we believe she can surprise the Romanian for a while.
Tip: Kalinskaya to win a set – Yesy: 4/6 (bet365)
