Kaia Kanepi v Lauren Davis Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the Estonian, who is now 35, and the American, eight years her junior.

Kanepi, Finalist Already in 2021

Kanepi’s best performance in Miami came back in 2008 when she reached the fourth round here.

It has been eight years since she won the last of her four senior WTA titles, the Brussels Open, but she did reach her first final since then at the start of last month, the Grampians Trophy warm-up event in Melbourne, eventually losing to Elise Mertens in straight sets.

In the Australian Grand Slam itself, she pulled off a major surprise by dumping the defending champion, Sofia Kenin out of the tournament in the second round, beating the American for the loss of just five games, but then went down to the Croat Donna Vekic after a three-set battle.

In Dubai, she was forced to qualify, coming through two matches to earn a first-round tie with Shelby Rogers, the world 52. However, the American proved too strong for her on the day, and she lost in straight sets.

She has not played since.

Davis Finds Some Form in Mexico

Davis has a poor record in WTA 1000 events. Her second round appearance here in Miami in 2013 remains the best of her entire career.

The American began the year badly, with three successive first round defeats in Melbourne – in the Grampians Trophy, at the Australian Open itself, and subsequently in the Phillip Island Trophy.

However, she played her way into some sort of form in Mexico in Guadalajara, having come through qualifying, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to the Italian world 113, Elisabetta Corriaretto.

Last week, she got to the second round in Monterrey, but was beaten by the eventual winner, Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland.

The American, back on home soil, will be keen to improve her dismal record in tournaments such as this.

Kanepi v Davis Prediction and Tip

Kanepi will start the clear favourite against the American who is lower ranked, does not have a good record in this event, and is not in the best of form in 2021 so far.

Tip: Kanepi to win: 9/25 (bet365)
