Peterson Resumes after Australia Swing

After the kind of season that Peterson had in 2020, she would have been apprehensive of the manner in which she started things off this year. A second round loss at the Yarra Valley Classic at the hands of Shelby Rogers, was followed by the first round defeat at the Australian Open, and Peterson’s struggles looked to have resumed.

Which is why her showing at the Phillip Island Trophy would have instilled her with a dose of confidence that looked to have gone missing from her game.

It started with a fighting three-set win over Anastasia Potapova before the world number 62 overcame Greet Minnen and Olivia Gadecki in the next two matches. A loss in the quarterfinals to Danielle Collins would have hurt, especially with the Swede winning just three games in that encounter but for a player who had won just three matches the whole of 2020, three victories in a single tournament would be a feel-good for Peterson.

Can she now resume her season with a victory?

Wang Hoping to Build on Rare Main Draw Win

A qualifier in St. Petersburg, Xinyu Wang finally won a main draw encounter when she edged past Viktoriya Tomova in the first round of that competition. That was one rare victory for Wang, who had last come out a winner in a match of a main draw of a tournament way back in 2019.

Last year, Xinyu’s best performances came at the qualifiers of both, the Australian Open and French Open which saw her make it as far as the final round before she fell to close defeats.

Unfortunately for her, she started off the season with an opening qualifying defeat at the Australian Open before losing in the second round of a couple of ITF tournaments. At the Lyon Open, she was knocked out in the first qualifier which why a main draw win at the St. Petersburg Open should relieve some of her nerves.

Would that, however, be enough to help her win another one?

Peterson v Wang Prediction and Tip

Peterson is 4/9 to win this and she will be our pick to get through easily given how troubled her opponent’s form has been over the past few months.

Tip: Peterson to win: 4/9 (bet365)
