Andrea Petkovic v Zhang Shuai Head to Head

There have been four matches played between Petkovic and Shuai before this and the German leads 3-1 on head to head. This includes a win for Petkovic all the way back in 2011 in Strasbourg which was followed by victories at the 2018 Wimbledon and 2019 New York Open.

Shuai’s only win came in their latest meeting in Guangzhou in 2019 with the Chinese player winning that match in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals.

Interestingly, Petkovic hasn’t played in too many tournaments in her career since that loss to Shuai.

Petkovic Attempting Comeback from Knee Injury

A former world number nine, Petkovic has fallen outside the top 100 on the WTA charts and that has been down to some inconsistent performances and a knee injury that kept her out for nine months. Some of those months were also pandemic-hit which meant not too much tennis was played anyway but since the time Petkovic has returned from her fitness issues, she has struggled in general.

In 2020, she participated in a few exhibition tournaments in the lead-up to the resumption of the season, only to play in just one competition – the 2020 French Open where she lost her opener. The German fell in straight sets to Tsvetana Pironkova in that encounter.

And returning back in 2021, Petkovic has participated in three tournaments, won one and lost three. In fact, Petkovic is on a three-match losing streak, having lost in the second round of the Gipplsland Trophy, and opening rounds at the Australian Open and the Phillip Island Trophy.

Petkovic now makes another attempt at a win.

Shuai’s Second Match of the Season

If Petkovic has played four matches this season, Shuai’s count reads a mere one. Her first and only match of the year came at the Australian Open earlier in February where she went down to Ann Li in the first round.

The 32-year-old had earlier had a decent season in 2020, where while there were a few result lows, Shuai also reached the final at the Hobart International and came back in the second half of the season with back to back solid showings on clay.

She was a quarterfinalist at the Strasbourg Open and then made it as far as the fourth round of the French Open just before calling it quits on the season.

It will be interesting to see how she goes in what will be her second match of the year against a player who is herself struggling to get a move on.

Petkovic v Shuai Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much to choose between these two players with Shuai a slight favourite at 8/11. We expect this to be an even contest too which goes into the third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
