Paul 5-5 This Season

Having made it as far as the quarterfinal at the Rotterdam Open earlier this season, Paul then lost back to back matches. First, he lost to Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in the last eight stage of the competition there, before going down to Milos Raonic in the opening round at the Acapulco Open.

This followed three successive tournaments in which Paul failed to proceed beyond the second round, losing at that stage in Delray Beach, Murray River Open and the Australian Open.

Two of Paul’s defeats this season came to players who had gone into the encounter as second-favourites, losing to Sebastian Korda at Delray Beach despite being a set up and then to Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-3.

What’s interesting to note is Paul has struggled to get going beyond the first couple of wins even last season. Since making it as far as the semifinal at the Adelaide International last year, in no tournament has did he manage to win three matches in a row.

Here, he will start off against a player who has never been better than a world number 70.

Giron Unable to Replicate 2020 Form

It was one of his best seasons ever but Giron has been unable to replicate his form from the previous year, losing in the opening round at three of the four tournaments he has played in, in 2021.

Since defeating fellow American Michael Mmoh and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the first two rounds of the Murray River Open, Giron has lost four successive main draw matches in fact.

He fell to Dan Evans at the Murray River Open, lost to Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open, Tallon Griekspoor in Montpellier and then Andrey Rublev at the Rotterdam Open. In essence, what needs to be looked at here Giron’s defeats, at least most of them, have come to players ranked way higher than him.

Can he overcome Paul in this one who is ranked outside the top 50 in the world?

Giron v Paul Prediction and Tip

Paul will hold the edge but as mentioned earlier, Giron is a solid player against those ranked around his own ranking and this could go the distance as a result. Three-setter in the offing.

Tip: Paul to win: 4/6 (bet365)
