Shvedova Hoping to Turn Things Around
It’s been quite a ride for Shvedova over the last few years. The Kazakh player missed a major chunk of the 2017 season with an ankle injury and was then out of action following the birth of her child.
She tried to make a comeback in 2020, played in one singles tournament in Doha and lost in the opening round to Laura Siegemund. Shvedova was then diagnosed with Covid-19 as well, because of which she had to miss the rest of the season and finally made a full comeback earlier this season.
This year Shvedova has played in four main draw matches, winning just one set across those four. In the fifth, in Doha, where she had featured last season as well, Shvedova won her opening qualifying encounter – her first since 2017 – before falling in the second round to Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
The former world number 25 now starts off her Miami campaign where she has been to the third round – and beyond – just twice in her long career. Can she add another win to her Miami Open kitty?

Martincova at Her Career-Best
She is ranked 105th in the world right now and that’s Martincova’s career-best ranking. This has been down to her performances in this season, which have seen her jump from the 129th to where she lies at the moment.
And while Martincova had failed to qualify for the Australian Open, a couple of decent showings on the ITF circuit, were followed by two strong performances in Lyon and Dubai.
At both those tournaments, Martincova started off as a qualifier but won at least one main draw encounter. She reached the second round in Lyon, and then overcame Kristyna Pliskova and Kiki Bertens in Dubai to make it as far as the third round before falling to the precocious teenager Cori Gauff.
With form on her side, it wasn’t too surprising to see Martincova win both her qualifiers in Miami easily, beating Viktoriya Tomova and Harriet Dart in straight sets. Can she now take advantage of her opponent’s lack of game-time to win her first ever match at the Miami Open?
Shvedova v Martincova Prediction and Tip
Martincova is an overwhelming favourite here, starting at 1/7 to go the distance, but we do think Shvedova could give her opponent some fight.
Tip: Martincova to win AND Over 18.5 games in the match: 6/5 (bet365)
