Canadian Vasek Pospisil returned to the tour in 2019 after a long injury related hiatus. Once ranked as high as number 25 in the ATP rankings in the middle of the last decade, it has been a difficult road back to the tour following back injuries and surgery.
After a good performance at the Davis Cup for Canada at the end of 2019, Pospisil was a finalist at Montpelier in February 2020, and quarter-finalist at Marseille, before the season took a break because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The return to the tour was positive with a fourth round US Open appearance, but most of the rest of the year was lacklustre for him before he ended up as runner-up at the ATP 250 in Sofia.
The Canadian did not featured in any tournaments this year before the Australian Open , pulling out of Delray Beach and the Melbourne openers due to different reasons. He looked phyically not 100% in his Aussie Open first round and was convincingly defeated by runner-up to-be Daniil Medvedev.
Early losses at Doha and Dubai to Denis Shapovalov and Marton Fucsovics are indicative that Pospisil is not where he would like to be with his game. He will be hoping for a better run here in Miami and hopefully able to get into his groove here on too.

McDonald Hoping To Capitalize On Season Down Under
25-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald had a good run at the Delray Beach and Acupulco tournaments in 2019 that saw him move to just outside the top 50 ranked players in the world. However, it has been a weak last season and a half for the American who fell outside the top 150 coming into 2021.
The 2021 season seemed to follow suit, with early losses at both Delray Beach & the ATP 250 in Melbourne for McDonald. However, the American’s strong all round play was on display at the Australian Open where he made the round of 16 defeating Marco Cecchinato, Borna Harris and Lloyd Harris en route before capitulating to Daniil Medvedev.
The American thereafter returned to the Challenger Tour where he won the title in Kazakhstan. Despite an early loss in Marseille to Karen Khachanov earlier this month, McDonald will be hoping for a good run here in Miami under conditions that suit his playing style.
Pospisil v McDonald Prediction and Tip
This makes for an exciting match and though Pospisil is considerably more seasoned, he has been injured and out of this sorts this season. With the American also looking to get his season into rhythm, this makes for a close match.
Expect the younger McDonald to pull through in a decider.
