Sanders Will Hope To Bring Adelaide-Like Form
Australia’s Storm Sanders comes into the tournament with a 4-2 overall record this year.
Having lost to Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan in the first qualifying round of the Australian Open, Sanders went on to reach her maiden WTA quarterfinals in Adelaide.
The 26-year-old defeated Americans Bernarda Pera and Katy McNally in the qualifiers, before demolishing Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and edging past Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in the Round of 16.
Belinda Bencic ended the Aussie’s stunning run of four consecutive wins with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals.

Cocciaretto Will Draw Inspiration From Guadalajara Exploits
Meeting the Australian in the first round will be Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who rebounded from a set down to oust Hungary’s Timea Babos in the second qualifying round on Tuesday to enter the main draw.
The 20-year-old right hander, who knocked out the United States Claire Liu in straight sets in the first qualifier on Monday, defeated Babos 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Italian comes into the tournament with a 9-5 win-loss record in 2021 (including qualifiers). The World No. 113 had her best tournament two weeks ago in Guadalajara, when playing as a qualifier, she reached her first ever WTA semifinal.
Cocciaretto, who started the year with three wins in a row in the Australian Open qualifiers, lost in the first round to Germany’s Mona Barthel in what was her second main draw appearance at the Melbourne slam.
At the Yarra Valley Classic, Cocciaretto had picked her first main draw win of the year, defeating China’s Lin Zhu before falling to Karolina Pliskova in the next round.
In her last tournament in Melbourne, at the Phillip Island Trophy, India’s Ankita Raina defeated the Italian in a tough three-set first-round contest.
Cocciaretto headed to Mexico next and knocked out Japan’s Mayo Hibi and America’s Varvara Lepchenko to qualify for the main draw in Guadalajara.
She then topped China’s Xiyu Wang in the first round before toppling the top seed Nadia Podoroska in the Round of 16. She notched a fifth win in a row, storming past the United States’ Lauren Davis, before falling to Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the semifinal.
She comes to Miami after failing to qualify for Monterrey, where she lost her qualifier against Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena.
Sanders v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip
Both players have delivered unexpected results this year, beating higher-ranked players and have enjoyed their best ever showing in a tournament at the WTA level. However, Cocciaretto will be the favourite to advance to the next round, where the 29th seed Jessica Pegula awaits.
Tip: Cocciaretto to win: 8/11 (bet365)
