Ricardas Berankis v Federico Gaio Head to Head
At the highest level these two have played each other just once, and that match came in the first round of the US Open last year. Berankis won that encounter in four sets.
Before that, it was Gaio who won in their first meeting at the Eckental Challenger which came in 2015.

Berankis in Just His Third Tournament
The Lithuanian played in two tournaments in Australia but including his season-opener at the Murray River Open where he reached the third round before bowing out to Jiri Vesely.
At the Australian Open which followed, Berankis beat Sumit Nagal for the second time in as many weeks to win his opener only to go down to Karen Khachanov in the second round. Since then, however, Berankis hasn’t played a single match till before this.
Berankis has been a part of seven campaigns in Miami as well before this, having made the first round on four occasions but he has never won a match. Facing a player who has never seen the top 100 on the ATP Rankings charts will give Berankis a good chance to overturn that record, especially given he did not have too many worries early in both the competitions he’s played so far.

Gaio Finally Makes the Main Draw
What’s interesting to note is since that defeat at the hands of Berankis at the 2020 US Open, Gaio has never played in the main draw of any ATP competition again. Till this one in Miami that is. And he will be facing Berankis again.
In the interim, Gaio has participated in three ATP and 15 Challenger competitions, and made it to the semifinals of two of the latter, while not qualifying for any of the former main draws.
Even here at the Miami Open, where he last played in 2017 but had failed to make it past the qualifiers, Gaio fell in the second round of the qualifiers only to be saved as a lucky loser. His journey, however, looks like it could end here, given his poor record on hard court surfaces anyway.
Berankis v Gaio Prediction and Tip
Berankis is a better player on hard court surfaces than his Italian opponent and that combined with his better form at the highest level should equate to an easy win for the Lithuanian.
Tip: Berankis to win: 4/9 (bet365)
