Jordan Thompson v Federico Delbonis Head to Head
Thompson and Delbonis have played twice before with the Australian leading the matchup 2-0. The pair had both their clashes on hard courts.
They last met at the Rolex Paris Masters 2020 round of 64 where Thompson secured a comfortable straight sets victory 6-2, 6-3.

Federico’s Good Chile Run
The Argentinian impressed at the ATP 250 event in Chile by reaching the semi-finals. Although he didn’t face any threat from a higher ranked player on his way, he has been in a considerably good form.
He also paired up with the Spaniard Jaume Munar at Chile and reached the doubles finals where they lost a tough, two-set match.
Delbonis, who has played all the tournaments on clay in 2021, will be looking forward to making inroads at Miami, a hard-court tournament.
Unfortunately for him, it has been a struggle for him on hard courts, whether at the Challenger level or higher.
Even though the Chile event would be a confidence-booster for him coming into Miami, he did lose out to a much lower-ranked Facundo Bagnis in the last four.
Having an unorthodox service action, he likes to attack and push his opponent deep into the baseline. While on the receiving end, he likes to take on the opponent’s serve with his backhand where he is very comfortable.
The question is whether Delbonis would be able using his strengths against an out of form opponent.

Thompson’s 2021 is All Hard Court
The Australian has played all his matches on hard courts this year. Having played only six matches in 2021, Thompson is in dire need of more court time. He enters this tournament on a three-match losing streak.
The recent drop in his ranking where he slipped 5 places down to 60 in the world, has been a reflection of his current form.
The 26-year-old played in Dubai last week where he suffered a first-round exit at the hands of the 87th-ranked Emil Ruusuvuori.
He has exited his last three tournaments in the first round but did make it to the quarterfinal at the ATP 250 event in Melbourne earlier this year, last showing signs of improvement.
His doubles form has been comparatively better as he reached the round of 16 at Dubai pairing up with Henri Kontinen.
With his big serve, he likes to serve and volley. Also being comfortable on the baseline, Thompson is sometimes shaky on the backhand side. He impressed everyone with his two-handed backhand down the line and slice drop volley on the run.
Thompson v Delbonis Prediction and Tip
With Thompson and Delbonis both losing out to lower ranked players at Dubai and Chile respectively, both the players would want to come out of their frustrating pandemic shackles with a solid performance as it is still early in the season.
Thompson is a heavy favourite to win this tie as hard-court suits his style of play.
He has impressed in 2020 on hard courts by reaching R16 at US Open and QF at New York Open. He must be looking to find his true form this year and a match against Delbonis must be a perfect opportunity for him.
Tip: Thompson to win: 4/7 (bet365)
