Belinda Bencic v Zarina Diyas Head to Head
It’s 1-1 from their previous two meetings, but they haven’t met since 2014.
Diyas won the first battle in Makinohara, Japan in 2013, while Bencic got her revenge in Pattaya City, Thailand in 2014. None of those two matches needed a third set.

Mixed Year For Bencic So Far
World No. 12 Belinda Bencic will begin her Miami Open campaign in the second round on Thursday. The 11th seed, who received a first round bye, comes into the tournament with a 6-5 record this year.
Having lost her season opener to Romania’s Sorana Cristea at the Grampians Trophy, Bencic could reach only as far as the third round of the Australian Open for the third consecutive year.
The 2019 U.S. Open semifinalist started the first major of the year with three-set wins over America’s Lauren Davis and Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, but went down to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in straight sets.
A four-time winner on the tour, the 24-year-old reached an 11th final in her next tournament in Adelaide. Knocking out Japan’s Misaki Doi in the Round of 16 and Australia’s Storm Sanders in the quarterfinals in straight sets, Bencic defeated America’s Cori Gauff in a thrilling three-set semifinal but faltered at the last hurdle against 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek.
Since then Bencic had an ordinary run in the Middle East, falling to Madison Keys in the first round in Doha and to Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the Round of 16 in Dubai. The 2019 Dubai Open champion, who got a first round bye, had won her second round contest against Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova. However, she had needed three sets to secure the win.
Into the main draw for the fifth time in Miami, Bencic will be hoping to better her 2015 exploits when she reached the fourth round of the tournament on her main draw debut. She is yet to win a match in Miami since then.

Diyas Knocks Out Venus Williams
On Thursday, Bencic will face Kazkhstan’s Zarina Diyas after the 27-year-old knocked out three-time Miami Open champion Venus Williams in the Round of 128 on Tuesday.
Converting five of six break points while saving one of four, Diyas defeated the veteran 6-2, 7-6 (12-10) in a match that lasted an hour and 28 minutes.
Ranked 89th in the world, the Kazakh right-hander improved to 5-3 this season. Having started with a defeat to Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round in Abu Dhabi, Diyas reached the third rounds at the Australian Open and the Phillip Island Trophy, where she retired midway against Bianca Andreescu in the Round of 16.
Diyas, who won the Japan Open title in 2017 and finished runner-up in Osaka in 2014, will be making a fifth main draw appearance at the Miami Open. Her best showing was in 2018 where she reached as far as the fourth round. She was defeated in the first qualifying round in the last edition in 2019.
Bencic v Diyas Prediction and Tip
Bencic is the seeded player but she will be wary of Diyas after her first round performance. Expect a third set in the contest.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
