Goffin 0-2 Against Aussies in 2021
After losing his final five matches of the 2020 season, David Goffin is off to a hot start in 2021.
The Belgian has played some fine tennis this campaign and his ranking is on the rise again. The 30-year-old made the semifinals in his first tournament of the season in Antalya. And although his stay in Melbourne came to a premature end (losing in first round of both the Great Ocean Road Open and Australian Open), in way it was a blessing in disguise.
Goffin cleansed his game in his next stop at the European indoor swing where he captured his first title since 2017 in Montpellier, coming from a set down to beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the final.
Much of Goffin’s 2020 season was marked by his inability to motivate himself and lack of self-drive. But the five-time ATP tour titlist has found the level that took him to 59 tour level wins in 2017. He appointed Germain Gigounon as his new coach during the off season and their relationship seems to bear some semblance of consistency.
Goffin will attempt to address his recent losing record against Australian players in 2021. In Antalya he was beaten by eventual champion Alex De Minaur, while at the Australian Open he suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of Alexei Popyrin.

Duckworth Advances After Seeing Off Zverev
James Duckworth’s only previous trip to Miami saw him advance into the second round as a qualifier in 2015. Six years on, the Aussie has repeated the trick after getting past Germany’s Mischa Zverev.
In a match that lasted two hours and 14 minutes, Duckworth outlasted the 33-year-old legs of Zverev, 6-2 4-6 6-4. He produced a sumptuous passing shot to earn a break of serve at 4-3 in the decider. But after he was foiled in his attempt to serve for the match, he regained his composure to close out victory on his third match point.
It was the 29-year-old’s first tour level victory of 2021 outside Australian soil. Aside from that, he has fared marginally better at the Challenger level where he made the quarterfinals in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.
