Felix Auger-Aliassime v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

They are 1-1 from their previous two meetings. Herbert won the first meeting at Montpelier in 2020, winning the Round-of-16 contest in straight sets. He was also very close to taking a 2-0 head-to-head lead in Marseille last year, but squandered three match points before allowing Auger-Aliassime to make it 1-1.

Auger-Aliassime Looking To Repeat 2019 Performance

2019 Miami Open semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime will begin his 2021 campaign in the Round of 64 on Friday after the 11th seed Canadian received a first round bye.

The 20-year-old, who is 9-4 this year, made a massive impression on his main draw debut in Miami in 2019, when he beat Casper Ruud, Marton Fucsovics, Hubert Hurkacz, Nicoloz Basilashvilli and Borna Coric to become the youngest men’s singles semifinalist in the tournament’s history.

John Isner ended the Canadian’s brilliant run in the semifinals with a straight sets win, however, both those sets needed tie-breakers to separate the two.

A seven-time ATP finalist, Auger-Aliassime is yet to win a singles title. He featured in three finals each in 2019 and 2020, and reached another this year at the Murray River Open, but once again faltered at the final hurdle. What’s more, he is yet to win a set in a title clash.

Overall, Auger-Aliassime has had a pretty good start to 2021, which saw him finish runner-up to Dan Evans at the Murray River Open, reach the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career and also reach the quarterfinal in Acapulco last week, before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The World No. 18’s only blemish so far this year was a first round defeat to Kei Nishikori in Rotterdam, where he was a finalist in 2020.

It will be interesting to see how far Auger-Aliassime goes this year. Given his appetite for making deep runs, he is definitely seen as a contender for the quarterfinals at least, but faces a tricky start against an opponent who has slowly got into a bit of rhythm.

Herbert Makes Short Work of Sousa

France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert needed just 66 minutes to win his first round match against Portugal’s Pedro Sousa on Wednesday.

Not broken once in the match, the Frenchman converted four of nine break points to win the contest 6-1, 6-3.

The win improved the World No. 74 to 6-4 this year.

Having made a 1-3 start to the season that saw him win just one match against the United States’ Maxime Cressy at the Great Ocean Road Open, Herbert, a four-time ATP finalist, finally found form at home in Marseille as he defeated sixth seed Kei Nishikori, Cameron Norrie, second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and fourth seed Ugo Humbert en route to a first final in two years. Daniil Medvedev won a close three-setter to keep Herbert waiting for a first singles title.

Last year, the former World No. 36, who has achieved a Career Grand Slam in doubles, had a 10-10 record, which included last eight finishes in Doha and Montpellier.

One of the major issues that plagued Herbert in 2020 was his inability to win close matches. He squandered three match points against Auger-Aliassime in the second round in Marseille last year and three against Dan Evans in Dubai. He also forced a fifth set against David Goffin in the second round at the Australian Open and against Alexander Zverev in the Round of 64 at the U.S. Open, but failed to close out either of those contests.

In 2021, he has shown improvement in that area, scoring two come-from-behind wins, one against Cressy at Great Ocean Road Open and the other against Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals in Marseille.

Auger-Aliassime v Herbert Prediction and Tip

Difficult to choose between the two. Auger-Aliassime will be a slight favourite as he is higher-ranked and has displayed better form for most part of the season. But Herbert seems to have hit form just in time and he will give the Canadian a tough time.

Tip: Evans to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
