Andrey Rublev v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of the Hamburg Open in 2020 and Rublev had won that first round match 6-3, 6-3.

Rublev Aiming to Better His Miami Record

The five-time ATP champion from 2020 has already won one title in 2021 and had it not been for a stunner at the hands of the fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev in Dubai last week, it might have been a chance to make it his second for the season. Rublev has been in that kind of form that he was expected to roll over Karatsev in what was his last match coming into this tournament.

Now, in Miami, Rublev’s goal would be to make it as far as possible or even win his first Masters title given the absence of the Big Three. And to be honest, that would be a realistic goal too given how he has gone about his business.

More vitally, from this match’s perspective, a victory here would help Rublev emulate his best ever showing at the Miami Masters, a tournament in which he has played five times but gotten to the third round only once.

With a 16-3 win-loss record this season, to go with all those titles last year, it would be surprising to see Rublev not turn things around in Miami as well.

Sandgren’s Form a Concern Despite Win

Pedro Martinez isn’t a name which would send shivers down the spines of most opponents, not yet anyway, but given Sandgren’s form and lack of results, there is every chance the American would have been in bit of a tizzy before the encounter.

In the end, Sandgren came through despite some poor serving and thanks to an injury to Martinez which meant the match was over by the time the second set had begun.

Sandgren and Martinez traded four breaks of serves in the first set before the American got himself a decisive one in the seventh. He held on twice after that to seal the opening set. In the second, he went up a break before his opponent retired from the match.

Before this, the 62nd-ranked Sandgren had lost in the second round of the Great Ocean Road and followed that up with back to back defeats in the opening round of the Australian Open and Acapulco Open. Against Rublev, he would have to turn things around drastically to have any chance.

Rublev v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

Sandgren has had his chances against top players in the past but against Rublev’s powerful groundstrokes and energy, it looks highly unlikely he would be able to overcome the Russian.

Tip: Rublev to win AND Under 19.5 games in the match: 21/20 (bet365)
