Fognini’s Finally Out of the 2020 Rut

While Fognini crashed out from the second round at the Acapulco Open, he would be reasonably pleased with the way things have gone this season as compared to how his game had collapsed in the second half of the previous year.

Coming back from the pandemic break, Fognini found himself at the receiving end of one defeat after another and ended the year with a 6-10 win-loss record. Three of those victories had come in one tournament, early in the year at the 2020 Australian Open.

He didn’t have the best of starts this year either, losing in the second round in Antalya and then kick-starting his ATP Cup campaign with a defeat to Dennis Novak. What seemed to have changed things around is the manner in which he rallied around his teammates in that tournament, helping Italy qualify for the final before falling to the powerful Russian side.

A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open followed soon after before he made it to the second round in Acapulco to make it seven wins already this season. That’s one more than what he managed all of last year.

Can he now get going here at the Miami Open, and emulate what he had done over the last two editions of this competition – make it to the third round?

Korda Rips Past Radu

20-year-old Korda wasted no time in getting to the second round as he overcame the Moldovan Radu Albot in straight sets in an hour and a quarter. Korda broke his opponent once in the first set, having saved two break-points of his own before that, and then overpowered Albot completely in the second by handing him three successive breaks of serves.

Albot’s only chance came in the second game of the second set when he had two chances to break Korda back but the American was far too wily for him and eased through to a win.

Korda had earlier this year made it to the final of the Delray Beach Open, his maiden ATP final, which ended with Hubert Hurkacz getting past him. He then went on to win the Quimper Challenger title, opting not to play in Australia before featuring in the second round at Montpellier, Acapulco and now in Miami.

While he lost at both those tournaments, can he take that step forward and win this one?

Fognini v Korda Prediction and Tip

Interesting to note that despite Fognini’s higher rank, his preference for clay might be overshadowing his performances on hard court surfaces and he starts off a second favourite at 6/5. Backing him to do a lot better than that and carve out a win here.

Tip: Fognini to win: 6/5 (bet365)
