Belinda Bencic v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head
They have never played each other in any competitive match before this. They did face off in an exhibition tournament which was held in 2020 during the pandemic, with Bencic coming through in two easy sets against Vondrousova.

Bencic Takes No Time Against Diyas
An hour and 16 minutes is all that Bencic needed to get past Zarina Diyas in their second round encounter. The Swiss number one won 6-2, 6-1 against a player who had earlier sent Venus Williams packing and had come into the match high on confidence.
Bencic broke her opponent five times and while she faced seven break-points on her own serve, the world number 12 saved each one of them to ensure there was not a semblance of a fightback.
What Bencic would dearly love to improve as the opposition becomes tougher with every round is her first serve percentage which was a lowly 57% in this match. She had earlier lost in the first round of the Doha Open and then fell in the second match she played at the Dubai Open, going down to Anatasia Potapova, which was again, a lot down to her serving.
The Swiss now faces an opponent who loves playing on clay more than any other surface but also one who comes into this match with a better win-loss record on hard court surfaces this year than Bencic.

Vondrousova Also a Straight-Set Winner
While Bencic’s second round opponent has never seen the better of a world number 31 and is a current world number 89, Vondrousova had a trickier one to get past. She was up against Wang Qiang, a current 38th-ranked player having been 12th in the world not so long ago.
And their match began on that kind of a note too, with Qiang breaking Vondrousova in the very first game of the opening set. Vondrousova fought back to level the score and then broke her opponent in the fourth game again setting up to serve for the set at 5-3.
While Vondrousova failed to do that on her own serve, she then earned herself two more break-points on Qiang’s serve and converted it off the second to win the set.
The second set was a slightly more straightforward one for Vondrousova. She faced three break-points on her own serve in the seventh game, saved all of them and then as her Chinese opponent served to stay in the match, broke her off the first chance she got to win the match.
Vondrousova had earlier made it as far as the semifinal at the Yarra Valley Classic and the fourth round at the Australian Open too.
Bencic v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip
While Bencic is a bookmakers’ favourite on this at 8/11 we believe Vondrousova has the game to get past her and win this in three sets. A 4/1 odds for that are tempting but we would settle for a less risky Vondrousova win at 11/10.
Tip: Vondrousova to win: 11/10 (bet365)
