Aslan Karatsev v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

Karatsev Hopes The Story Continues

Aslan Karatsev has been the dream story of the 2021 ATP Tour so far. Playing in his first ever Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open, the Russian had a magical run, making the semi-finals defeating the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov before falling at the hands of world number one and eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev’s spectacular run saw him become an overnight star on the tour as his ranking went up more than 100 places from being a qualifier ranked in the top 150 in the world to within the top 30 right now.

Last week in Dubai,  he was off to a convincing straight sets win against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov, and then came up with three wins in deciders against seeded players all in good touch, i.e. Dan Evans, Lorenzo Sonego, and Jannik Sinner.

This set up a semi-final against the in-form fellow Russian Andrey Rublev who was on a 23 match winning streak at ATP 500s and it did not seem like there was any stopping him from another win and a shot at another title. But, Karatsev prevailed in another tight three setter.

Playing the final against South African Lloyd Harris also on a dream run, Karatsev won in a canter in straight sets, winning his first ever ATP title, moving to number 27 in the world and assuring everyone that he was here to stay for the foreseeable future

Uphill Task For Kukushkin

Kazakh veteran Mikhail Kukushkin once ranked in the top 40 in the world is now ranked just within the top 100 in the ATP rankings.

The year did not get off to the best of starts for Kukushkin with a first round win at the Murray River Open but followed with a second round defeat to Stan Wawrinka in same tournament. Dominic Thiem defeated him with ease at the Aussie Open first round and he then lost four successive first round matches, first at two of the Challengers and then in Marseille and Dubai.

Coming to Miami this week hoping to overturn the slide, he was fortunate to get a first round walkover against Briton Jack Draper and now has an uphill task against the dangerous Karatsev, as Kukushkin seeks to get some sort of a run of form going.

Karatsev v Kukushkin Prediction and Tip

Both players are in different places with their form and career and the sort of season Karatsev has had, this should be a routine straight sets win for him.

Tip: Karatsev to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
