Daniil Medvedev v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and Medvedev has won both times. The first came at the second round of the 2019 Wimbledon and Medvedev overcame the loss of the first set to complete a four-set victory, before they met again at the 2020 Australian Open where the Russian won in straight sets.

Medvedev Breezes into Round Three

It was always going to be a difficult one for Yen-hsun Lu. The 37-year-old, ranked outside the top 1000, facing the world’s second-best player in the second round of the Miami Masters was always going to go one way – and that’s how it panned out.

Medvedev, fresh from another title win at the Marseille Open, flexed his muscles in his second round match against the Taiwanese player, and defeated him 6-2, 6-2 to move into the third round.

The match lasted less than an hour, and rather interestingly saw Medvedev even getting broken once but his opponent never had a realistic chance.

The Russian will now face a slightly tougher opponent but not one he hasn’t handled in a season where he has won 15 of the 17 matches he has played. And it is difficult to see how he can mess this up unless his mind isn’t into this – which seems unlikely given this could be a very good chance for him to go the distance in the absence of all the members of the Big Three.

Popyrin Continues to Excel This Year

It has been the kind of year which has seen Australia’s Popyrin jump up on the rankings charts thanks to a solid performance so far.

Having begun the season ranked 114th, he has climbed up to 86th at the moment and a third round place in Miami, in a tournament he hadn’t even made the main draw the last time he played, will go a long way in helping him climb up the ladder.

Popyrin’s journey to the third round has been an easy one too. The ATP Singapore winner first eased past Feliciano Lopez in his opener but the bigger win came in the second round against Reilly Opelka. Opelka was  8/11 odds to win the match but not only did Popyrin defeat his American opponent, he also did it in fine style, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Now comes the Aussie’s real test and while the result might still go against him, it would be interesting to see how he goes against the world number two.

Medvedev v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Medvedev is 1/8 to win this and 2/5 to do that in straight sets, which is what we are going to go with. If you are looking at a slightly riskier option then a games handicap of -4.5 for Medvedev is at 11/10.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
