Aslan Karatsev v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

At tour level this will be their first official meeting in a main draw, but Korda has beaten Karatsev before, at 2020 French Open in the final round of qualifying (7-5, 6-2).

Consistent Karatsev Keeps On Winning

There is something genuinely cheering about seeing Aslan Karatsev at the peak of his powers right now. Physically, the man is machine. His robotic-like calves have generated plenty of casual bravado, with journalists joking on how the rest of the tour should work on their lower legs to record improved results.

Aside from the obsession on Karatsev’s gym-built strength, this is arguably one of the best starts from a player who rose from the ashes to become an elite challenger in such a short space of time.

There is a heightened desire to play better at each tournament, and this barnstorming 2021 season has seen the Russian attain a career-high ranking and win a maiden ATP tour title in Dubai.

In his Miami debut (there will be many debut appearances this year!), Karatsev picked up from where he left off. The Russian beat Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 6-3 to win his first match at ATP Masters 1000 level. He was slow off the blocks, which is so unlike him, but overcame a deficit due to the slow-playing courts.

But once he managed to find his groove, the impact was instantaneous. Karatsev broke serve four times to win in one hour and 20 minutes.

Korda, Another High-Rising Debutant

Karatsev’s rise has been jaw-droppingly insane that it has hushed up all success stories on the ATP tour. One of those is that of 20-year-old American Sebastian Korda who reached his first ATP final in Delray at the turn of the year.

The Next Gen star scored his first top 20 victory of his young career on Saturday in beating the 10th seed Fabio Fognini of Italy. He had been 0-3 against this caliber of opposition going into the match, after losing to Nadal, Thiem and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the recent past.

Korda overcame a first set blowout in which he lost all four of his service games to the fiery Italian, dropping it 6-1. But remarkably, he held all his service games thereafter to turn around the match on its head. He fired an impressive 20 winners (1o of those from his bludgeoning forehand), and five aces.

With this win, Korda managed to record back-to-back wins for the first time since the end of January at the Quimper Challenger.

Karatsev v Korda Prediction and Tip

Both players are debutants at this event, but neither of them would have envisaged the incredible return of results since the turn of the year. Karatsev, just like at the French Open qualifying, starts as a clear favorite, and we are backing him to stay true to this tag.

Tip: Karatsev to win: 2/7 (bet365)
