Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Overall, their head to head has Medvedev leading 3-1 but Tiafoe’s only win had come in the qualifying rounds of the 2015 ATP Nice. In main draws of competitions, all three of which came on hard court surfaces, Medvedev is 3-0 up which includes wins at the Australian Open and US Open of 2020.

Medvedev Taken to the Distance

Medvedev was stretched alright but at a set up and 4-1 in the second, he wouldn’t have thought of needing a tough decider to come through in his third round match against Australian Alexei Popyrin.

That’s exactly what happened. As Medvedev prepared to serve for the match, he lost his serving rhythm and gave Popyrin three break-points of which the Aussie converted the first to push the set into a tie-breaker.

And while Popyrin then relinquished a 3-0 lead, and missed two set-points at 6-5 and 7-6, he converted his third to push it into the final set.

The Russian did not have it easy in the third either. He couldn’t find a way to break through his opponent’s serve till the seventh game and it was only at that stage did he manage to heave a sigh of relief, converting his first match-point while serving at 5-4.

With this win and the one in the previous round over Yen-hsun Lu, Medvedev has extended his victorious run to six in a row and his 2021 record to 16-2. Can he now make it his 17th win to go one better than his previous best showing at the Miami Masters which came in 2019?

Tiafoe Claws Back against Lajovic

Always known to have the potential, it looks like Tiafoe is finally living up to the fan expectations as he registered his third successive three-set win to register a third consecutive place in the round of 16 at the Miami Masters.

A quarterfinalist in the 2019 edition – the 2020 event was cancelled – Tiafoe enter the fourth round by overcoming a set deficit against Dusan Lajovic to carve out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over the Serbian. In doing so, he stopped Lajovic from setting up another meeting with Medvedev, whom he had defeated just weeks ago at the Rotterdam Open.

After dropping his serve twice to lose the first set, Tiafoe was on the verge of crashing out when he faced two break-points at 4-4 in the second set. The American saved those before needing to do the same at 5-5 as well, before getting one and converting it at 6-5.

Probably bouyed by his effort, Tiafoe then broke Lajovic in the fourth game of the decider, frittered away two more of them in the sixth before closing out the match on his own serve.

This win comes on the back of victories over Stefano Travaglia and Dan Evans in the first two rounds of the competition.

Medvedev v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Medvedev is 1/6 to win but don’t expect Tiafoe to bow out without a fight, especially given how the Russian has shown signs of struggles in the previous round. Might still be a straight-set win but one that sees Tiafoe push at least one of the sets towards a tie-breaker.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
