Garbine Muguruza v Bianca Andreescu Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the 2019 Indian Wells Open where Andreescu crushed Muguruza 6-0, 6-1 to make it to the semifinal on her way to winning the title in that competition.

Muguruza Given a Scare by Kalinskaya

Ranked outside the top 100 and with a career-best ranking of 96th in the world, not too many expected Anna Kalinskaya to be much of a problem for the in-form Muguruza but then not too many had expected the Russian to even make it as far as the third round of this tournament.

Muguruza ended up scraping through in the end and advancing to the fourth round but not before losing a set, and being a break down in the final set. It was the Spaniard’s wherewithal and confidence from her current form that saw her through, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 with a decisive break coming in the ninth game of that third set.

In fact, such was the stickiness of Kalinskaya, she fought through three match-points before falling on the fourth.

The world number 13 had earlier come through in straight sets against Xinyu Wang, having won the Dubai Open title just before this competition. In fact, with a 20-4 win-loss record this season, Muguruza is second behind only Naomi Osaka for number of wins but her opponent here would hope she can provide similar chinks in her armour for her to exploit.

Andreescu Wins on an “Off Day”

Andreescu admitted at the end of her third round win over Amanda Anisimova she had had an off day and her task had been to find a way to push on from such a situation. She had done exactly that to advance to the round of 16, as she overcame the loss of an advantageous position against the American to carve out a victory.

Up a set after winning the opening tie-breaker, Andreescu was also a break up in the second and third set. In the second, she lost that advantage when Anisimova broke back and then exchanged another sets of breaks before the American scrambled past her in the tie-breaker.

Andreescu recovered to break Anisimova in the third set as well, but this time around there was no looking back as the American found no answers to her opponent’s serves, finding no way back to break back and left Andreescu a winner in three; 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 6-4.

The Canadian had earlier got a first round bye before overcoming Tereza Martincova in the second round. If she can show similar fighting abilities against Muguruza, we could have bit of a thriller here.

Muguruza v Andreescu Prediction and Tip

Muguruza would still be a favourite for us despite Andreescu’s never-say-die attitude which has been in display in both her matches so far. However, at 1/3 the odds are just not up to the scratch and other option would be to go with the games market.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
