Andrey Rublev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between both players.  Rublev leads the head-to-head 2-1. While Cilic won their initial meeting in Geneva in 2015, Rublev won both their meetings in 2019, here in Miami and in Moscow.

Rublev Run Continues…

Andrey Rublev has been in phenomenal form of late, winning five titles in 2020, making his first ever Tour Finals and breaking into the top eight of the ATP rankings.

He continued his strong run of form at the start of the season too, leading Russia to the finals of the ATP Cup, and was in ominous form at the Australian Open, until the quarter-finals where he ran into compatriot Daniil Medvedev and lost in straight sets.

The Russian added to his title count at Rotterdam winning another ATP 500, and looked the favorite in both the tournaments in the Middle-East, at Doha and Dubai respectively.

Surprise semi-final defeats to Roberto Bautista Agut in Doha and Aslan Karatsev in Dubai derailed his season ever so slightly, but he still arrived in Miami with a  16-3 record for the year and in the absence of the Big Three and Dominic Thiem, one of favorites for the title.

Rublev’s form this week has again become clinical defeating American Tennys Sandgren in the opener dropping three games and in his third match in March against Marton Fucsovics he prevailed in no time 6-1, 6-2 and looks as good as anyone for a shot at the title at the moment, as he betters his season record to 18-3.

Cilic Resurgence Long Overdue

Former world number three Marin Cilic was a regular member of the top eight of the ATP rankings for most of the last decade. Cilic was the winner of the 2014 US Open as well as a three-time grand slam finalist, being runner-up at the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open, to Roger Federer each time.

However, the last season and a half has seen a notable drop in form and fitness, with injury layoffs, early losses and disappointing form as the Croat is now ranked number 45th in the world. Taking breaks from the tour and returning refreshed has not worked to Cilic’s favor either.

While the 2020 season after the pandemic hiatus was disappointing for Cilic, the 2021 season has not got off to the best of starts for him.

An early loss at the Melbourne ATP 250 was followed by a first round meeting against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, which also culminated in a first round loss for the Croat. A somewhat better run at the Singapore Open saw him make the final four but the Mexican Open saw another round one loss.

After two difficult first rounds here where he did beat number 13 seed Cristain Garin, Cilic put up an inspired display against rising Italian Lorenzo Musetti and runs into another Next Gen in Andrey Rublev.

Rublev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Although on paper this reads as a good match-up, the form of the players has taken very different trajectories in recent times. While Rublev has been on a string of success, Cilic has had a drop in level and fitness and his game has looked a shadow of what it was.

Expect a straight sets win for Rublev.

Tip: Rublev to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
