Sinner Continues Rapid ATP Tour Rise
19-year-old Jannik Sinner from Italy has been earmarked as one of the Next Gen to look out for, but had a mixed start to the season. He looked very much on course, given his form at the start of the season ATP 250 in Melbourne, where he won his second career title.
With the tightly packed schedule in Australia, the Italian ran into Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the Aussie Open and bowed out in a tough five-setter at the year’s first major.
An opening round loss to Aljaz Bedene in the Montpellier opener and suddenly the season was not looking so promising anymore. A minor niggle saw him pull of Rotterdam, but the Italian had a much better week in Marseille, before losing in the quarter-finals to the newly crowned world number two and eventual champion Daniil Medvedev.
With impressive wins in Dubai against Roberto Bautista Agut and Alexander Bublik, Sinner fell at the hands of eventual champion Aslan Karatsev, and arrived at the first Masters 1000 of the year in Miami hoping for a promising run.
Sinner looked good this fortnight again and for the second time this year won a high quality match against Karen Khachanov of Russia. In his first Masters 1000 quarter-final, Sinner was up against the charismatic rising Kazakh Alexander Bublik, who he had beaten in Dubai in a decider and it was another tight contest, with the Italian prevailing in another third set.
In his first Master’s semi-final, the young Italian was up against Spaniard veteran Roberto Bautista Agut who was coming off a very convincing win against top seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. Sinner had beaten Agut in three sets as well in Dubai and the gritty man from Spain was determined for a revenge win.
With a first set win, Agut looked like heading for a win putting pressure on the Sinner serve every game but the Italian struck dynamite at the right time to clinch the set. When down a break in the decider, the Italian broke right back and put pressure on the Agut serve when the Spaniard was serving down 4-5 and in turn booked a place for himself in Sunday’s final.

Best Week Of Career So Far For Hurkacz
Rising Pole Hubert Hurkacz is ranked just within the top 30 in the world in the ATP rankings and the year was off to a good start for the 6’6″ Next Gen star with a title win at the Delray Beach Open.
A quarter-final showing at the ATP 250 in Melbourne was a good add-on, but first round losses at the Australian Open and at Montpellier dented his confidence as he was hoping the new season would bring him consistency. The ATP 500s at Rotterdam and Dubai resulted in round of 32 exits for the Pole and the season was starting to look underwhelming for Hurkacz.
It was a routine opening win for Hurkacz after a bye here in Miami against American veteran Denis Kudla, but since then it has been a good run for the hardworking Pole.
A tight two sets win against Canadian Denis Shapovalov was followed by a three-setter against another Canadian Milos Raonic, setting up a quarter-final against the number two seed from Greece, Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas looked in good touch and in control up 6-2, 3-1, when the momentum changed and the Pole pulled off a spectacular win in a decider setting up a semi-final against the in-form Andrey Rublev, who by then was the favorite for the tournament with the top three seeds out already.
Hurkacz started his semi-final firing on all cylinders and there was no looking back. He was up 5-1 in no time, with his big serves and powerful forehand. Although Rublev broke back and saved four set-points the Pole clinched the set 6-3.
With a break in the first game of the second set, Hurkacz was always ahead and despite some nervous moments and match points missed, he closed the set 6-4 and booked a spot in the final, in what has definitely been the best week of his career.
Sinner v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip
In a somewhat unexpected final, we have two first time finalists with bright futures, who are in great form. Expected an excellent contest and a match that may well go down to the wire.
It is difficult to pick a winner and it will be the better player on the big points that will prevail. Predicting Sinner to inch ahead with a close win in a decider.
Tip: Sinner to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
